I just read a Kiem article that said Murphy didn't really show anything in mini camp but Hood did. So I was thinking the top De's on this team are Reyes, Baker, RJF, and Paea. Im not sure if we keep four or five De's. If we keep four I cant see Murphy taking a spot from one of those top four. All of these guys have adequate experience and have produced. Even if we keep five and Hood has a good camp are we really going to keep Murphy over an established Hood? Will it come down to special teams?

The bottom line here is that Murphy's inexperience hurts him greatly. But his 2nd round pick status and contract helps him. Also, if an injury happens that will help Murphy greatly. Plus I did not count the draft pick Idonnais in all of this. I assume he is going to be a NT but you never know. As of right now you would have to think Murphy is 5th or 6th on the DE depth chart. AM I wrong? Thoughts?

My thoughts are it will all play out in TC and I don't think Scot is keeping a guy because he was a 2nd round pick. I think he wants the best players available.

what round he was drafted in and what his contract is has no bearing on if he makes the team or not. Now the fact that he plays ST does and that the coaches might see potential in him could help. But as Sportster said, this will play out in training camp. He is a role player and most likely always will be.

I agree with you about he is only a role and ST player. When I said this months ago I got dumped on by a lot of people on here. Looks like my opinion on Murphy is actually coming true.

That's not why you got dumped. It was your assertion that smith was drafted because of murphy's play was why you got railed. Smith was drafted because SM viewed him as the BPA when his pick came up. Murphys play had nothing to do with the drafting of smith. That would mean that SM drafts for need and he has maintained all along he doesn't look at need when choosing his picks. No one ever said Murphy was anything more than average.

Murphy had to switch positions to try to stay on this team. Spin it however way you want it. I was right that Murphy will basically have no role on this defense if he even makes the team. I said the guy was a backup special team player and I got railed.

Dean... the problem with your opinion of Murphy is that it is tainted by your man crush on Moses. You felt from day one that Moses should have been the second round pick. You were butt hurt that we took Murphy in the second and risked losing Moses in the process. This formed your opinion of Murphy and nothing more.

Spin? It seems to me that you are the one spinning it....again. What I have stated is what happened.

Not spinning at all. I always stated he was a backup special teams player and under performed as a 2nd round pick. You guys didn't see it that way. When I said lets try to trade Murphy again you guys disagreed. I believed someone did say that they would actually turn down a 3rd pick for Murphy. Oh the memories are coming back now. lol.

Kid came in, ended up starting for us as a rookie due to injury. And didnt do too bad in light of the situation. He got the start last year because he was our best option at the position starting the season. So yes, he was the best available option out of a rather fucked up group of average at the time... much like your boy Moses. We have better options now, sucks for him. BUt the fact that he has the ability to even be considered at another position rather than be cut... still makes him better than some stiffs on the roster. :thumb:

The guy has 26 starts in 32,games. I don't see that as underperforming . I go see that we signed a very good Fa that is more dynamic

What you don't realize is that we were basically forced to start Murphy his rookie year b/c there wasn't any real competition at the OLB spot. Plus we didn't have depth. Also we were a bad team. Smith has performed better in less than half the starts Murphy has had. So what does 26 starts out of 32 games really mean? Just b/c a guy starts doesn't mean he is productive.

I have always shared Dean's opinion that Murphy is just a guy and not worthy of a 2nd round pick. And I agree that he is vulnerable this year. With that said I never understood how lineman can be evaluated when they are going half speed in shorts with no contact.
