I think the biggest problem with comparing players is that there are 2 questions

1. Who had the better career
2. Who was better

I feel like we all answer question 2 instead of question one... even when the question 1 is more important...

You could also throw in another factor (could be part of the 2. Better)

3. Who had the better peak/prime

Nah. Doesn’t need to be a third question. That is a pretty big factor of both original questions.

I think it's a valid argument. There are plenty of backs who had significantly great primes, but didn't have nearly the longevity to sustain it. So if a back has 3 great peak/prime years, but a bunch of other mediocre years can they really be defined as being better than another back. Two guys that come to mind are Priest Holmes and Shaun Alexander. How do you compare them to say Jerome Bettis? What about guys like Eddie George and Stephen Jackson who had longer sustained play but not near the peak of Holmes or Alexander?

I guess there could be the third more so to protect the Gaylord perry effect( can’t think off hand of a good football example). Where a player plays for SOOO LONG that he is no longer remembered for being so great.

I see him as a very good back.
He is a lock for the HOF.

I know what you are talking about. Kinda like how Favre's MVP years got kind of forgotten later in his career. Or remembering big lumbering Shaq, not the guy who'd take David Robinson off the dribble and outrun everyone on the fast break.

As for Gore, consistent. Good but not great all around... Well a great blocker at picking up the blitz. But very good out of the backfield early on and solid for his career. Ok red zone guy, but not really great at the goal line.

I like the Curtis Martin comparison without the top years but more good years. Fred Taylor but healthier. Later career Thomas Jones for a long while.

I'd agree. Adrian Peterson is 1800 yards behind him. Not likely catching him. Next closest with years to play is LeSean McCoy who's 4000 yards back and already 30 years old.

After that, you are at guys who barely have played. Bell, Elliott, Gurley types. He'll be a top 5 all time rusher for a lot of HOF eligible years.

Good enough for a long time to be a feature back, but nothing overly special. Very consistent for a very long time. The Curtis Martin comparison is unfair to Curtis Martin. I look more to John Riggins, Jerome Bettis or Ottis Anderson.

He just moved into 4th place on the all-time rushing list yesterday.

Who do you rank comparable to him? Just curious to see where he stands in your eyes as an all time RB.
Solid career but definitely not HoF caliber.

Also have to factor in his horrific knee injuries in College. Dude should have never made it this far, for sure. He was also a good receiver too, but for some reason Harbaugh kind of cut that out in his era and his targets just dropped in half.
Used to be you could not give him the ball near the goal line because he would fumble. This went on for several years before he finally got over it.

Vince Carter is reaching this category for me. No one really remembers how dominant he was in the early 2000's. They only see him as the guy holding on for dear life in the NBA.

He's like Tracy McGrady who does not deserve to be in the HoF.

Doesn't surprise me that you don't think Carter doesn't belong in the HOF. Typical with your line of thinking.

I think that gets a bit blown out of proportion since he had those back to back weeks in 2006 with goal line fumbles.

Outside of those two, his red zone fumbles were:

2011 at the 12 yard line
2013 at the 20 yard line

Neither of those were really what I'd consider goal line carries.

Then twice in 3 weeks in 2015 with the Colts at the goal line, but that's not really relevant to his early career.

So he never really got over it, but he never really had it to begin with either. Seems kinda flukey to me.

Don't worry about Monty. He's the Randy Quaid type Indians fan around here. He just likes to talk shit about his own "teams". LOL.
