Seems fitting.

Yeah, when a guy slugs .500 for the first time as a 35 year old, you go ahead and give him another year.

(Especially when your regular CF is going to be out until July at a minimum)

Kang was let go last year. Marte, Polanco and Archer make up 90% of that guaranteed salary. And if they trade Marte that would drop to around 24 million in guaranteed salary.

Also add the fact they have only 1 catcher on their 40 man roster.
With a payroll that low they should just outbid everyone on Donaldson and then hope he gets off to a real good start, then trade him to a contender for some prospects mid season.

A lot of free agents left but most of the big names are signed. I think the biggest names left are Donaldson, Ryu and Bumgarner. Castellanos is coming off a good year too.

You would think but the owner will never pay. Remember this is the team whose largest contract ever is still Jason Freaking Kendall.

At least they won’t rip your heart out every year. Our largest contract and longest tenured player disappears come October

Seems like a good strategy to speed along the rebuilding process. The Phillies tried it a couple times with veteran starting pitchers and it never worked but I can see how it could work. And it would have worked with Charlie Morton but they were a year early.

Would make sense but the Pirates are in a perpetual rebuild. Even the few years in the playoffs they refused to add real talent at the deadline to improve. This is the team that hasn’t won a playoff series since 1979.

Well at least that one turned out good. Oddly enough even though I can't name more than 2 pirates from last year I can rattle off the 1979 starters with no problem.
Moreno,Madlock,Parker,Stargell,Robinson,Ott/Nicosia,Garner,Foli

Crazy how the mind works. Is this what Alzheimer's is like?

Sadly most Pirate fans would have the same responses.

Austin Romine takes a 1 year deal from Detroit. Appears he'll be their starting catcher.

I think the Yankees will miss him more than they realize.

I mean I love Lindor and if I was the owner I would say 100% new contract...but we all know this owner is a cheap SOB so why not get as much as you can for him NOW. That would be a ton of young talent.

Red Sox sign Perez to a 1 year, $6M deal.

Take that, Yankees!

That’s a hell of a haul though. The guys listed are all either in the bigs and producing or are MLB ready.

I"m hearing Clevinger is being talked about in the deal as well possibly

If Clevinger is going, then I hope that means that catcher coming from LA becomes Ruiz. If I'm Cleveland, I can't accept this trade fast enough.

Yeah they would have to strengthen that first offer but I love Clevinger. I think he could be a top SP for years to come. The Dodgers don't need to worry about money...just throw in Kluber and keep Clevinger lol. But I will say I'm sure Clevinger's salary will be getting up there in the next couple years...it all goes back to money. I think they will still try to trade Kluber in a separate deal
