Went to the theater to catch Obsession (2025).

I agree with everyone's take on this one. Its a predictable movie but still well worth the watch. Its a very immersive movie that makes you very uncomfortable. Inde Navarrette was awesome. And not to discredit her, but I felt like Curry Barker (Director/Writer) knocked this simple movie out of the park. The score, the cinematography... Everything about this movie was executed really well.

I finally got around to this, and I don't get why everyone is singing such praise.

I mean it certainly had it's moments where you felt some tension/anxiety but meh. I kept waiting for it to go somewhere, and it really never does. Finally the ending happens and I was like, really? I guess it was a dark comedy because I was chuckling at some moments more than others. Other parts just felt really unrealistic or off... and how the main character just goes along with it and never at one point is checking Nikki into a hospital or psych ward lol.

I dunno... I guess it's a full on dark comedy masking itself as a horror about how we wish for things without really thinking (I get it) and then pay the ultimate consequence, but ehhh.. I kept waiting for the end to take a really serious twist where it turned out he was the one obsessed after overdosing and in a mental ward or SOMETHNIG, I dunno.. I also don't understand how making someone fall madly in love with you to act like that? It kind of starts out normal but why is she all of the sudden going Evil Dead/Exorcist mode?

It's a pretty 5/10 movie for me (probably high 4s rounded up). Acting was pretty decent by the chica but everyone else was kind of meh. Interesting premise like the monkey's paw or something but that story is so much better. I dunno. Very forgettable film from my end :noidea:

I mean it kind of goes along the same line as Weapons. But Weapons had me laughing and amused FAR more and it was better acting by a landslide there lol.

^The first one is great. Every one after that? No.

Eh 2 was pretty good because of Tim Curry, David Cross, and Chris Elliott.

Those three were hilarious and so many quotable lines - especially from Elliott.

"I've been doin' my bun busters every day. I squeeze real tight, and then let loose. I squeeze REAAAALY tight! And then let loose whoooo!"
"My other hand isn't strong enough!"
"I don't know what the hell that is, but I lick it anyway."
"Big enough to get your hand right up in there, and STUFF THE SHIT OUT OF IT!"

The whole dinner scene, the wheelchair fight with the doves, James Woods and the toilet scene LOL, there was some good moments. And Tim Curry and his hornball chuckles lol.

Not going to be everyone's 'cup of tea'.

I felt like the progression was perfect. It starts out "normal", but his reactions to her love is what escalates things. It wasn't all at once. There were plenty of moments that made things escalate more linearly. And of course he tries to go along with it (and not check her into a psych ward) because he's in love. They had a sequence that showed a relatively normal span of a relationship before things got weird. And ultimately once he starts to question her & tell her she's not behaving normal... Thats when the evil dead/exorcist mode escalates dramatically.

But I get it. Its not the type of movie in the same vein as the majority of the generic horror genres. Its mostly Psychological horror with some supernatural elements. Psychological horror is not a very popular subgenre and typically causes a lot more negative reaction because of how they leave things more open to interpretation. The simplicity of this movie's story works well.

Just saw Obsession myself and I'd agree it's not a "proper horror" movie in that it's probably not that scary and well over half of the events are comedic. But this doesn't prevent it from just being a fun movie that makes you laugh and have emotional reactions. I was still saying things like "Oh, why are you going back there?" at the screen which is part of the enjoyment. The concept is very simple and it just has a lot of creativity around that concept.

I bought into the hype of Weapons last year and it was fairly disappointing to me but I don't feel that way about this one. Nicely done.

You guys just into Horror movies?

Thinking about adding visiting haunted locations/houses to my bucket list. Think that would be pretty cool.....visit places that are allegedly haunted and sech before I croak (since I'm almost 55).

Prolly be myself solo since the wife isn't into that kind of thing.

Best horror movies I've seen over the last few years. Sinners, Frankenstein (Guillermo Del Toro version), Companion, Weapons and The Long Walk.

Obsession and Backrooms were good, not great. Very predictable.

^For one, Sinners, Long Walk, and Companion are not horror movies...yes, they have horror elements but these are dramas with action. In fact, all the movies you list are pretty light on actual horror.

And calling Obsession "predictable" is missing the point. Of course it's "predictable"...it's doing the Monkey's Paw story which has been done a hundred times before. The uniqueness is how fun they made such a tired concept.

Well crap, it’s already been posted but I don’t get why everyone liked Obsession. Not a bad movie but people are pretending it’s like the original Scream. To me it’s like just like one of those no name horror movies on Amazon that you get recommended. They usually have a decent premise, you watch it then forget you watched it.

I agree with both points.

Obsession wasn't a perfect movie, but I found it very entertaining. Real Nikki vs Wish Nikki. Navarette was excellent in her role and really made the movie for me. I didn't like the moment with Ian's wish, but as a whole, really well done. More of a scary movie than a horror movie, but there is true horror in having someone or something take over your body. The real villain/horror is the schmuck boyfriend.

I liked Weapons too, but we didn't get too much about the lore in that movie that we got with Obsession.

Starting off spooky season strong!

Got the Halloween decor out Sept 1st lol. Been watching horror movies every night. Finally got around to a couple new ones: Backrooms (2026) & Disclosure Day (2026).

Disclosure Day is not horror, but had some jump scare elements and is a sci-fi thriller. Kind of a weird movie and didn't care much for how it ended.

Backrooms was another very weird movie. Just weird all around. Loved the sets & cool immersive scenes though. Feels like one of those movies that should/could have been so much better from a horror standpoint, but it was just serviceable.

Also rewatched the remake of The Thing (2011), It Follows (2014) and the original Stephen King's IT (1990) mini-series. Had to in honor of the late Tim Curry.

I saw "Over your dead body", a dark comedy starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving. The whole premise is that an unhappy dysfunctional married couple go to a vacation cabin, while both are secretly planning to murder the other one.

Fun dark comedy, meaner than expected. The whole cast is good in this one.

The movie is fun and funny, and it's gory and violent. The spouses' plan goes to shit when it's revealed that a group of fugitives is hiding in the attic, and the married couple is now forced to fight for their own lives instead of trying to murder each other. There's a scene in which the husband is almost raped, which I think went too far even when it's kind-of played for laughs.
