Mike Yastrzemski and Dereck Rodriguez both played for the Giants against the O’s on Friday. This is the second set to accomplish this feat just this year. The Blue Jays have Vlad Guerrero Jr and Cavan Biggio.

When was the last time 2 descendants of HOFers played for the same team in the same game?

Here are all the 2nd/3rd gen HOF descendants...

Dale Berra
Dereck Rodriguez
Mike Yastrzemski
Vlad Jr
Earl Averil jr
Cavan Biggio
Eddie Collins jr
Tony Gwynn jr
Chuck Lindstrom
Earle Mack
Queenie O’Rourke
Eduardo Perez
Tim Raines jr
Dick Sisler
Dave Sisler

Wow looking it up Ed Ott is not related to Mel Ott. I always thought they were father/son.

So who's the best of the bunch. I see several average players at best.

Related. Ken Griffey, Jr. got to play with his dad. I think that is the only HOFer to play with his father on the same team.

Just noticed you conditionalized your comment about a HOFer playing with his father. My comment was just in regards to father/son in the same game, regardless of HOF status (each pair had a HOFer, though).

As it turns out, though, only 3 HOFers are 2nd generation players...

Roberto Alomar
Cal Ripken
Ken Griffey Jr
(Barry Bonds)

And interestingly, all 3 (4) played on a team where their father was on the coaching staff.

Most of the time in all sports, the son isn't as good as the father.

There's exceptions in all sports(Ken Griffey Jr, Richard Petty, etc), but the sons usually fail to live up to the father's name.

I would guess that it is because the game was the fathers passion while it was the child’s birthright instead. Hard to make your own name when it is handed to you.

Not 100%, of course (Griffey, Curry, Ripken, Bonds, etc) but true enough to be a rule, me thinks.

Going racing with my example, but it always amazes me when one son is great and the other looked like he didn't even know what the sport is.

Not certain Jose and Ozzie are a great example. There were extenuating circumstances for their difference in talent level...

Magic juice worked for one but not the other:noidea:
Ozzie never had the cut, ripped look that Jose had. It was pretty easy to tell them apart, I thought. One was a beast, one was soft and cuddly.

Rock Raines and Tim Raines Jr.

I totally forgot about this one. Even now, it doesn’t sound familiar. The country was slightly distracted at the time, though, so that probably explains why no one remembers it.

Ya, but real HOF’ers not participation trophy famers. Raines and Baines being in the HOF show baseball has lost standards into inducting HOF players. It’s become the Rock n Roll HOF.

Baines, yes. Raines, no fucking way.

Granted, he is not an “inner-circle” HOFer, but he is legit. He is one of the best leadoff hitters of all time. If he was not a contemporary of the Goat, he would be more recognized as such. Also, playing the bulk of his career in Montreal does not help his name-recognition case.

When it comes to brothers racing in general, the FLocks of the 50's are the only ones that come to mind where more than one was good.

Bodines, Wallaces, Waltrips, Burtons, Keselowskis, etc.

Where is the love for Ward Burton and Donnie Allison?

Ward is a joke because he always ran top 10 when I went to a race. Donnie was a decent driver, not great but above average

Ward is one of my favorite drivers, mostly for the way he talked, but at the end of the day, he was mostly an also ran throughout his career, while for a period of time, Jeff was one of the top drivers.
