Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto tells Jim Bowden of ESPN (link) that new addition Dae-ho Lee, who signed a minor league deal with the team earlier today, will compete to be Adam Lind’s platoon partner at first base. (Jesus Montero and Gaby Sanchez are also in that mix.) Notably, Dipoto tells Bowden that Lee, who was listed at 6’4″ and 286 pounds last season in Japan, is down about 45 pounds. Stories of players being in good shape certainly abound this time of year, but size was a question among some pundits when writing about Lee. Bowden offers a scouting report based on conversations he’s had, writing that Lee has good hands at first but below average range. At the plate, he can draw walks and has power to right-center field, Bowden adds.

Range shouldn't matter at 1B when you are paying your 2B that much.

What if your 2nd basemen is kinda lazy on the field?

I am sort of surprised by this type of signing from the players perspective. In Japan this guy was playing everyday and now wants to come to the states to play for a AAA team? Or at best be a backup 1st basemen but is better suited for DH for a major league team? Did the teams in Japan no longer have any interest in him and if so why do the Mariners? Is the money better?

And from the Mariners perspective you are getting a guy that I quite honestly can't see making the roster. Very curious to see this guy in spring.

It was probably a goal of his to play in the majors and at 33 it might be his last shot.

On the M's side, no risk. Minor League deal so why not? I am guess once the local kid backed out of his deal with us we just filled his spot with this guy. I mean it is the Mariners and it is all about the entertainment value which he should bring during spring training.

Unfortunately the downside of the Lind move is you almost have to platoon him due to his numbers vs LHs. It really hampers roster flexibility. Basically can this guy show more then Montero this spring is the question. But yea it's a minor league deal so reason to get to emotional one way or the other just yet.

Its not a bad move I mean unless we want Montero playing behind 1st and DH batting .220 I would rather take my chances with this guy. Im just worried about his weight 285 pounds good god can he even make it to first on a double? We will see if he really lost 45 pounds once spring training hits
