God damn.

I know it's the minority opinion, but I believe he was the best player this game has ever seen.

Carried himself so well. Sad day for baseball.
I just listened to Max Kellerman run off some of his stats. He certainly has to be in the conversation. The true home run leader and still holds the MLB record for most RBI. 3000+ hits, 97.8% approval in 1st year ballot to the HOF which is just fuckin stupid that no one has achieved 100% by the way.

Take away all his HR, and he STILL had 3000 hits.

He was a legend.

Yeah I was just looking at that. Never hit 50 homers in a season, but holds the record for total bases with 6856 and batted .305 for his career. Never the flashiest player, but he was consistent as hell.

He was in my top 5 of all-time players.
I am happy that I was able to get his autograph when I did. He was a true class act. Never a bad word for anyone.
I recall a story from spring training a few years back where he was helping the young Braves' hitters. He gave them some advice and they didn't seem to "get it". He, at age about 50, stepped up to the plate with a bat in his hands and proceeded to hit 5 or 6 bullets into the gaps, with 2 going over the fence. He turned to the players and said, "Just do it like that".
Here is his baseball reference page for those who want to see what "perfection" looks like:

It is ironic that he was known as the Home Run King when he really was just an overall fantastic hitter that wasnt your classic all or nothing power hitter.

For every HR he hit, he struck out 1.83 times.

For comparison:
Bonds - 2.01
Ruth - 1.86
Arod - 3.28
Pujos - 1.97

Compared to 2019 Home run leaders
Alonso - 3.45
Suarez - 3.85
Soler - 3.70
Bellinger - 3.65
Trout - 2.66

It is a shame that he played on team that wasn't very good other than him for most of his career. Had he been a Yankee and seen the post season more often and been in front of the big lights more often, he likely would be considered the best player other than Ruth to ever play the game.

Why the question mark in the title? Are we debating whether he should rest in peace?
I didn't want it to be true. He was an icon when I was a kid. He was one of the players I looked up to all of my life.
