A couple buddies of mine are Phillies fans, and needless to say they're incredibly excited about this upcoming season with Lee added to their rotation. I think they're both a little less knowledgeable about baseball than I am since they get all their info from mlb network and espn whereas I go here and fangraphs mostly. One of them tried to argue with me that the Phillies have the 2 best pitchers in baseball now (Halladay and Lee) without even looking up the stats to see that Lincecum, Felix, Wainwright, Josh Johnson, and even Johan Santana have been worlds better than Lee the last few seasons.

I thought I could take advantage of the hype from espn and their over excitement of the rotation by making a bet with them about the respective pitching staffs. I did something similar last year with Posey vs. Mauer (Posey and I won :D) where we each picked 3 stats and conditions and came to a mutual 7th stat as a tie breaker. I'm wondering what everybody else thinks about if we had these same rules how I could go about beating them to prove a point that our staff is right there with theirs.

I was thinking that given our staff has Lincecum and Sanchez we'd have a hefty advantage in H/9 and K/9 and if we included bullpens then I could pick bullpen era as my third stat. At the same time I know that they'll probably take advantage of Lee and Halladay's strengths and pick BB/9 and maybe IP or W. What does the board think about what stats our team would easily beat theirs in? Feel free to suggest something like: if you only count 4 starters then..., or if you only count the 5 starters and closer then..., any conditions you can think of. If you know any Phillies fans that have been somewhat arrogant about their expectations this season then you should use the conclusions we come to here to your advantage.

For the actual terms I'm debating where we should bet beer/liquor, money, or something along the lines of "the loser has to play a game of pickup basketball at the park wearing a skirt." Feel free to let me know your thoughts on this as well.

I'd definitely want to look at team ERA and QS -- especially if you're including 5th starters. Another stat I'd want on my side is Saves.

Thanks guys, I'm not as confident in Sanchez as I am in our other 3 starters (excluding Zito) to match up with Philly. My plan therefore would be to ask if they'd take the bait on just Lincecum vs. Lee, or if they aren't as confident in Lee let them have Halladay and let me pair Lincecum with any mlb starter (not sure if Felix or Wainwright is more of a sure bet) or Lincecum, Cain, and Madbum against Halladay, Lee, and Oswalt/Hamels, all 5 starters, or the total pitching staff. I think that the only one of these where I can't pick stats to give myself a clear advantage would be to take the top 3 starters on each team, and Lincecum vs. Lee would be the one I'd really want to do given all of Lee's recent overhype.

I got somebody to take on the Lee vs. Lincecum bet for the season, but the other guy hasn't replied to me yet. If any of you guys are friends with any Phillies fans then seriously you should try to see if they do the same. The media hype has gotten to most of their heads to the point where they don't respect our rotation, so why not try to make a profit of some sort off of it?

So what are the exact terms of your bet so far? (not the payoff, but the definition a winner?)
