Should we do away with the term student athletes and just call them semi-pro players?
As long as they get paid, I doubt they'll much care what anyone calls them.

I mean they're still on scholarship

They still go to school

They still have to get the grades to pla
The only difference is they're now remunerated for the money they make for the school

I still don't know why so many people have an issue with this.

Understood, but again, as long as the kids are being paid, what anyone calls them is immaterial.

But do they really go to school? Wazzu is a small school but football players have maybe 10-2 to be able to attend classes. It’s mostly glorified online school if you’re a football or basketball player.

They go to school today as much as they did pre NIL.

The term student athlete was just a word made up by Walter Byers to avoid having to pay workers comp to injured athletes.

I would be good if the term went straight to hell to hang out with that piece of shit.

You sure? Obviously I don’t attend anymore but from everything I’ve heard it’s not remotely the same. Which makes sense cause back in the day football and basketball games were on the same schedule instead of random days or times

at this point, why not.

some of these kids can just say "I go to college for football" and it isn't wrong. Why waste classroom space on them.

Cause there is a tight rope colleges and the NFL have to walk. Colleges like the football revenue and the NFL likes the free training. There is nothing stopping these football players from playing pro football they just get more exposure, better training and better pipeline to the NFL instead of the UFL or whatever that league is called now or Canada.

You mean besides the CBA between the NFLPA and the NFL, right? The agreement says no athlete may be signed by an NFL team until three school years after high school graduation. The courts upheld that with their Maurice Clarett ruling. Why? Because it was part of the collective bargaining agreement. Would today's courts rule the same way? I doubt it.

There is more pro football than the NFL. It’s no different than some HS basketball and baseball players have gone overseas to play professionally until they are eligible to go to the NBA or MLB. A HS player who wants to play pro can apply for a temporary Canadian citizenship and play in the CFL at 18. But of course they won’t cause they want to use college football to get to pros the same as colleges use their football players.

Pro baseball, basketball, and hockey (MLB, NBA, NHL and their associated minor/developmental leagues) have traditionally allowed kids out of high school (and younger in MLB) to sign. Few make it to the "bigs" straight out of school, but guys like David Clyde and Darrell Dawkins come to mind. Hockey numbers for Canadians straight to the NHL are probably higher. More important than tradition is the CBA between those leagues and their athletes...none preclude youngsters from signing like the NFLPA/NFL agreement. International soccer is the same way from what I understand.

Things must have changed in the CFL from back when I followed it. First, I've never heard of Americans being required to take Canadian citizenship, temporary or otherwise, to play in the CFL. There are American who've played in the CFL who decided to stay and become Canadian citizens (ex-Chuck Ealey,) but I'd be shocked it they must do that now just to play. Got a source for that?

Last I heard, there was an agreement between the CFL and NFL about them not signing underage players. I think it was one of the stipulations the NFL squeezed out of the CFL when they bailed the Canadians out of insolvency back in the early 90s. It was about the same time the league changed its rules specifically allowing those with true junior status to be drafted into the NFL. Prior to that, US players could (and did) play in Canada before they graduated/ran out of eligibility. When their graduating class became NFL draft eligible, so were they.

I don't know what the various US spring/minor/indoor football leagues do relative to youngsters, but it wouldn't surprise me if they signed kids out of high school. Pretty sure the international American football leagues in Europe and elsewhere (like the ELF) have no restrictions, although I wouldn't imagine there are many 18-19 year old Americans kids who would run off to play for the

Anyone think as a society that we place too much emphasis and value on sports?
