Anything over 6 or 7 years will be a huge mistake. It will be just like Howard's contract and Jason Werth's contract with the nationals. The 1st 3 years maybe something. But the remaining will be a train wreck.

I'll have at least 2 team options in that contract for Harper or manny. I just dont like long lengthy contracts in baseball. Hopefully I'm wrong and they sign either or and we'll all be dancing and climbing grease polls down broadstreet.

Long contracts with big money payouts can cripple a teams payroll down the road when they have other needs.
However, I would not be against an 8 year deal since both players are only 26 years old. Beyond that is like burning money!

Deal can be structured with only part of the money guaranteed and the balance based on performance, I would think. It seems these huge contracts should be done like that.

Good info. Painful reminder that Howard's contract hadn't even started by then...

I'd go 8 years X 40M = $320M. For either one, or both.

Forgot about that - $125 million extension to begin in 2012 when he was 33. I better add '13, '14, and '15. LOL.

2013: 11 HR, .266/.319/.465
2014: 23 HR, .223/.310/.380 (190 Ks; most since 2008)
2015: 23 HR, .229/.277/.443

Howard’s Net Worth as of 2019: $140 Million :pound:

Hey Retro, how come you live in Phoenix, and root for the Rams, Lakers, and Phils?

Because I have moved 37 times since HS and those Professional Sports teams were those I followed as a child and continue to follow as an old dude. I also support the Flyers. Phillies and Flyers because I was born and raised in Pennsylvania (in the east near Philadelphia) and I followed the Rams and Lakers when I was just 6 years of age for various reasons. Makes sense?
