What do people think? His stats are OK but not slam dunk HOF material. That said, he is the prototype for the "big" NFL receiver that became popular in the following decades, and played in an era where DBs could basically r*pe receivers without drawing flags.

Very funny. He caught one ball for Dallas, a stain on an otherwise distinguished career.

he should be in. played 2 positions at an elite level, and at 6'8, he was a freak.
lynn swann getting in ruined the HOF for me. drew pearson is now the only member of the all 70's team not in canton. and pearson was 5x the receiver swann waas.

At least he was out there playing, not just spraying spittle like Cowher...

He shouldn't be in.

Made his reputation off of one big year and was extremely pedestrian after that.

The closest modern day equivalent I can think of would be Jimmy Graham. That's not HOF material in my book.

....but as someone already mentioned here, he isnt the worst WR that they have let into the HOF.

he had 3 seasons over 1,000 yards...a rarity back then. at 32 he still averaged 17 YPC and over 1,000 yards. by 30, most receivers were football dead back then.

at 6'8 he was impossible to cover.

Yet fate made him an Iggle and thus no Super Bowls.....

He finished top 10 in yardage in the league 2 seasons in his entire career
He finished top 10 in catches in the league 1 season in his entire career.

The one thing that he did is catch touchdowns.

But its not like he did that at some incredible rate as teams just didnt pass for TD's back in the day. He was catching 7-9 on average a year and finishing in the top 10 in that stat.

....

He definitely isnt a guy that I would get red in the face about objecting to his entering in the HOF. But I just dont think he meets the requirements. There are a lot of pedestrian WR's that played after him that can argue that they were better WR's compared to their peers than Carmichael was compared to his.

Judging by his stats in a non passing league era, he probably should have been elected a while back.

good read from 2015 when he "retired" at 65 from the eagles (he would help in practices). think about that bolded part. someone here called his seasons outside of this year "pedestrian". A "pedestrian" 870 yards led the nfl in recieving in 1977, drew pearson.

perspective people.

Harold Carmichael retiring; should he be in Hall?

Timing is everything when evaluating a receiver’s career. Carmichael played during the 1970s and early 1980s, just before rules changes caused passing stats to explode. Carmichael led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,116 in 1973. In 1977, the NFL leader, Dallas’ Drew Pearson, had fewer than 1,000 yards (870).

During the initial period for Carmichael to receive Hall of Fame consideration, in the late 1980s, players such as Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin were putting up vastly expanded numbers. Carmichael’s stats didn’t seem as impressive by comparison.

But the website Pro-Football-Reference.com compares players from different eras. The players who compare most closely with Carmichael include Andre Rison, Larry Fitzgerald, John Stallworth, Keyshawn Johnson and Fred Biletnikoff. Stallworth and Biletnikoff are in the Hall of Fame. Fitzgerald seems like a near-lock for enshrinement when his career is over.
Stallworth, who was enshrined in 2002, caught slightly fewer passes (537) for fewer yards (8,723) and fewer touchdowns (63) over his 14-year career. He was a member of three Super Bowl winning teams, but that’s also an indication that he played with a superior quarterback for much of his career.
