now THIS was the man back in the day. man-oh-man, can you imagine what this guy could've done if the 3 point line existed in the '60's and '70's...?

How was he chosen to be the logo? I know he was good but there were better players during his time in the NBA correct? Anyone know?

Happy birthday to him. His mark with the Lakers as a player and an executive is just incredible.

What a joke. Jerry West turns 75 today and we're busy starting umpteen bullshit threads about Lebron.

A real legend. If West didn't have to face the Russell Celtics he would probably have more than 5 rings as a player. One decade later and he could have ruled the 70s.

Never got to see the man play, but I sure did get to enjoy watching the teams he put together play and kick ass. I find myself sort of caring about what the Warriors do simply because West is working for them now. I'm sure his anxiety levels are way down now since he no longer is a NBA GM.

I was thinking of that too. All those years coming up short against Russell's Celtics.

He did what he could to augment the Showtime Lakers with instrumental pieces and had enough vision to acquire Kobe to play alongside Shaq, whose acquisition took a little doing in it's own right. He wanted the pieces to help L.A. win.. not just be merely competitive. That fire as a GM was respectable in its own right, in spite of (and maybe because) of the oh-so-close seasons the Lakers experienced in the 60s.

It's difficult not to want to tip your hat in his direction.
