I think most Cardinal fans knew that they didn't do enough in the off-season to make this team a contender. It is disappointing that they are once again banking on the minor league system to bail them out.

Hate it when the Cards sweep the Cubs then end up dropping 2 in a row while the Cubs get 2 easy ones in Miami

I'm with you. Losing 2 to the Twins in St. Louis is not good.
Frankly, I'm not sure how they have won as many games as they have. I was looking through the starting lineup and those batting averages are not good.
Batting averages fter 34 games:
Carpenter - .152
DeJong - .250
Ozuna - .246
Fowler - .151
Garcia - .211
Pena - .176

Replacing Molina with Pena hurts. Yesterday, a starting lineup which featured 3 batters hitting just over .150 is not going to win much.

Flaherty was very impressive today....Reyes will be back on the 29th....Carpenter is starting to hit a bit and the rookie Oneill has 2 homers in as many games. I'm not getting overly excited, but things might be looking up. Martinez at 1B is still a huge problem defensively.

Those are some things to be optimistic about. It still feels like it would lead to a .500 team. Ill keep hoping and rooting though. For me, any type of playoff push will be a bonus this season. I'm hoping they are priming for next season.

Currently 7 games over .500. Better than I thought.
They don't feel like a team that can compete in the playoffs this year. I hope they don't trade away assets for a 1 year guy.

100% agree. I think in the playoffs or even FOR the playoffs. Offense is too boom or bust and it's been bust most of the year. MM needs to go. Bader not playing everyday is an absolute travesty

Who do we need to go after before the trading deadline?

Where do we need help the most in our line up?

Bullpen. Outside of Hicks and Norris who can you trust to protect a lead back there?

jwolt92, We can't even trust Hicks and Norris so I totally agree with you that a much better bullpen is what we need most.

Norris blew a save in his last outing but he got the win thanks to the Wong home run.

Hicks has great stuff but he has more walks than strikeouts and that's asking for trouble in the late innings.

I can't complain much as a Cardinals fan. We arent use to this... Bullpen sucks and a lot of injuries. Need to get back to advancing runners too over the all or none with power.

This year I am sorta playing for stats. Not giving up. but wanna see the young guys look good. Wanna see guys like Weaver, Flaherty, etc get consistent. I am looking forward to DeJong getting back out there.

Who all would be on the trade block? We don't have many free agents at seasons end.

Draft Crazy, I'm not giving up yet either but I agree with what you said.

Who knows what will happen before the trading deadline but I still think our biggest need to stay in the hunt is quality relief pitching. I haven't checked to see what the actual number is but I can't count the games we have lost this season in which we had the lead after 6 innings and lost the game.

I know that injuries are a part of the game too but the Cardinals must be among the top when it comes to the injury bug this season.

Matheny is gone now. Not really surprising.
I don't blame Matheny for where the Cardinals are. They just don't have the roster to do much better. I don't want to see them give up a bunch for a 1 year rental at the trade deadline. Maybe this is the year they should be "sellers".

Myles, I don't know that we should be 'sellers' but I do agree with you that we should not give up a bunch for a one year rental. We definitely need some better relief pitching but a lot of other teams need this too.

I get the feeling the Cardinals are going to be buyers and not sellers. I hope thats not the case but you'd have to think Mozeliak is on the hot seat and he is going to take a risk somewhere

Clayton, I have that same feeling and if this turns out to be the case I sure hope that we will be smart buyers.

I'm afraid you are correct. Kind of a bummer. I just think this team is more than 1 player away from being a major threat. It'd be nice to sit back and develop for next year.
