One thing that I always did when I was learning was watch a lot of pro goalies and tried to pick up things from them. Taped a lot of games and watched them over and over. So, I pulled a bunch of youtube videos down for the boy to teach him the finer points by example. Figured I'd share what I chose for discussion.

For overall otherworldly talent: Tretiak (duh), Lindberg, Sawchuk and Cheever.

For Stance and positioning: Felix Potvin (Early Potvin), Ken Dryden and Kirk McLean

For unshakable technique: Brodeur, Roy, Mike Richter

For Agression and risk/reward: Grant Fuhr, Jon Casey, Olie Kolzig and Bernie Parent

For not giving a shit how many shots you face, just go after each one: CuJo, Tugnutt, Andy Moog, Mikka Kiprussoff, Jim Craig

For being just good enough to win and matching well to your team: Osgood, Mike Vernon, Bill Ranford, Don Beaupre

For what NOT to do: Hasek, Roman Cecmanek, Tom Barasso, HEEEXXXXTTTAAAAAALLLLLLLL

Red Wings gave CuJo 20 shots a game...maybe that was the problem. He got rusty when he played with us. :L

for technological innovation: Garth Snow (contraption which raised the shoulder protection when he went to his knees), John Garrett (his jersey was basically a dress to cover more of the 5 hole)

Curious - where would you slot Mike Liut? my fuzzy memory put his style similar to McLean. he was just so calm and seemed so big in the net some nights.

Snow. LOL. Yeah, I should build him shoulder pads out of plywood.

Liut - I'd agree he was very similar to McLean. Might consider him more along the Vernon/Osgood realm. Especially when he was with the Caps.

You know what I hate? I hate when people bust on Flyer fans and say they can't read and pay no attention to details. :D

Bernie Parent and Gerry Cheever are the men who made me want to be a goalie. Watching those two was pure art. I am more likely to exclude Tretiak from a goalie discussion than I am to exclude Bernie. Which is to say "Not likely at all". I put Bernie under aggression and risk/reward. No forward knew quite what they were going to get when the came in on him.

Apparently if you want to teach your kid how to be an angry hothead of a goalie, show him some Jimmy Howard. It's been a long time since Detroit had an angry goaltender.

Hey 43. Good thread. I've never been big on goalie technique but I always appreciated Lundqvist's ability to read the play. Maybe have the kid watch some of his work.

Or, if neither of you have had the chance yet, watch young Jacob Markstrom in the Panthers organization. Seems very technically proficient to me. I have no doubt that this kid is a future star.

funny thing... Canucks' scouts were over to see Markstrom when they happened to catch the rare game that his backup started. Hello, Eddie Lack!

Good call, Kenny. In Lundy's rookie season he drew a lot of comparisons to Pelle Lindbergh.

I stated that I thought he was the best European Goaltending talent I had seen since Pelle. One of the highest compliments I have ever mustered. Especially for a Rangers player.
