The starting pitching has been great... The bullpen has been great... This team needs a bat.

Thankfully the Pirates are a couple games over the .500 mark and a couple games out of first place.. The Brewers have struggled...The Cardinals lost Carpenter and Bagwell... Only the upstart Reds stand in the way of them making a run at the division...

I am not usually one to send away a top pitching prospect... but the Pirates rarely get the chance to compete... They currently are playing well... And a legit power bat would really give them a chance to win this division.... IMHO

The Padres are going nowhere and Quentin is hitting out of his mind right now... The Pirates could sure use a upgrade over Tabata or Presley out there...

I know the Bucs would have to part with one of their better pitching prospects and a position player to get him... but to make the post season I think it would be well worth it...

Thoughts??

What would it take to pry him loose from SD?
What would you give up?

quentin, altho an upgrade, is not a top shelf hitter.
is already 29 (we are not real contenders till 14-17).
only one exceptional year.
not marte, heredia, cole, or taillon, hanson, .
i would send any AAA pitcher or combo except alderson and owens.
also, correia, lincoln, or grilli.
presley, jones, lambo, or grossman. also can use lower midling prospects
would give them a choice of 2-4 depending on who they pick.
i would make a better package for someone better or was only 24-27.

I agree with sychmd he is not worth a top prospect since it is only 6 games this year he is hitting that well.

Also the Pirates need more hitters who can get on base, power/rbi's don't mean that much if you don't have people in front of you on base. Hence look at Quentin's numbers 9 extra base hits and only 9 RBI's.

I would not send Tallion or Grossman ( mostly because there is more pitching depth in the system than positional players )... Cole and Tallion are off limits for Quentin.. But Presley and one of the other pitching prospects... Even Alderson would do it for me.

I would not limit the trading to just one player either... Upgrading in the outfield would help... I would still look for a 1B bat...

Quentin will help the offense immensely.. But he cannot single handedly make this offense potent... But Walker, McCutchen, Quentin, and Jones would be a nice 2-3-4-5 in the lineup...

And I know that Quentin is not Ryan Braun or Albert Pujols... But he will command much less in a trade... HE does not make anywhere near the money those other players do.. So it is something that would work.. or could work..

Quentin also walks at the end of the year. I am not overly interrested, would be more interrested in Soriano, provided Cubs pick up a ton of salary and don't want much in return.

I would look at it differently, go for a guy in AAA just ready to break in, and give up value for him. My choice would be Wil Myers, and I would package a lot to get him, I would try to avoid Marte since he is so close, but I would not exclude Cole or Taillon.

I would do something with Cole and Hansen, then add Locke and another mid tier prospect. I realize there is a lot of love for Hansen, but he is in low A, projects as a second baseman, and strikes out a lot.

Quentin has played six games, and sucks defensively, how about a PTBNL and cash considerations.

Thats about what i would be willing to give up for him. He has historically shown power when healthy but when healthy it the key there. He is the Erik Bedard of hitters.

I think we should make trades like we have been the last year. Give up a suspect or two for an overpaid vet ala Burnett and Lee.

We can upgrade Mercer, Harrison and Cruz for peanuts.

Plus, there are plenty of overpaid sluggers we can get for a warm body or two Soriano, Lee(Carlos), Youklius ect. I would much rather us keep our top 15 prospects and dumpster dive at the trade deadline than make a big move.

So who would you consider our top 15 prospects?

Hmm, here would be my no trade list, not on 25 man roster, in no paticular order:

Pitchers
Tallion
Cole
Heredia

Hitters:
Marte
Sanchez
Bell
Grossman
Hanson
Cabrera

Not for a rental:
Owens
Locke
Wilson
McPhearson

I wouldnt be in a hurry to trade our overslot high school pitchers in the low minors either.

Here is a news flash, Alen Hansen is not the best position player in West Virginia, nor is he the best hitter in West Virginia. I realize everyone has man wood for him since he is a SS, but he likely will have to move to 2B as he progresses, that is where he profiles best, he seems to be well below average as a defensive SS. But since you brought him up I would like to bring up Gregory Polanco, Wily Garcia, and Jose Osuna, all 3 are every bit as good as Hansen. However, I would not consider any prospect at low A untradeable, there is also no one at AAA or AA that I would not trade to improve the major league team.

I just think that everyone has now become so enamored with our minor league system that they have forgotten that the point of a franchise is to win at the highest level. The only player in the organization that I would not trade is Andrew McCutchen, and even that is up for debate, but the return would have to be so substantial that the other organization probably wouldn't accept the offer.

I can see an argument for Polanco, but I don't see any argument for Wily Garcia or Jose Osuna.

Both Garcia and Osuna have the potential for more power than Hansen, Garcia also plays RF which is equivalent to slightly more significant than 2B. Osuna profiles to have the most power of the group, but is pretty much limited to 1B. However, like i said it is hard to call anyone in low A a legitimate prospect.

How is RF more significant than 2nd base.....I don't know where you are going with that.

Your defensive position rating does not relate to my own experience or the opinions of just about everyone else. No offense.

Polanco is underappreciated compared to Hansen but you've got your head buried in the sand if you're not impressed by a .957 OPS and nearly organization leading power numbers in just about every counting stat - by a middle infielder. Osuna would be interesting if he weren't a 1B. Garcia isn't interesting at all.

957 OPS is impressive, but it is in low A, thus decreasing the significance. By that I mean it makes him interresting, but not untouchable. If he carries this over to high A and Aa, then it is more impressive.

Youlklis... If he was available...I would love him in a pirates uniform... His glove is not great at third.. but it is passable... He draws walks he has power..He can play first base, and some third...

Problem is the Red Sox are not giving him away and he makes a fair amount of money...But he is a quality offensive player.

Now is the perfect time. The team is heating up, playing with confidence, now acquire a steady veteran to keep it that way, preferably one who gets on base at a good rate.
