Giants Sign Marc Kroon To Minor League Deal: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Marc Kroon, 38.

Former second rounder of the Mets. Has been pitching in Japan the past few years.

Obviously nothing big here just a minor league deal with a spring invitation, but I just like knowing about the players we have. Apparently just pitches out of the bullpen, no starting background.

Does anyone know anything about this guy?

Other than the fact that when him and Suppan aren't battling for the last roster spot, they can chat about what life was like prior to Buster Posey's and Brandon Belt's births, nothing.

I was driving and listening to 680 when they mentioned this guy.

Apparently he threw the hardest fastball ever clocked in Japan, 101 mph.

So there's that.

I read he made $13 million a year in Japan and was a premier closer over there. He must be pretty decent.

I had no idea players over there could make that much.

Yeah. That's a big chunk of change. Plus, they never get booed. My buddy is moving to Tokyo in two days, and he told me they never boo the athletes or show displeasure for their team or derision towards the opposing team. Not a bad deal. I guess he wants to try to win a World Series ring after making his money. I can't say that I blame him. Good luck to the geezer! :)

Living in Japan, he probably needed $13 million just to make ends meet.

Maybe it was 13 million YEN per year.

I wonder if it was misreported in the article I read. There was one article that said 13 million per year, but maybe it is really $13 million over the entire time he was there (about 6.5 years), which is still a pretty nice chunk of change. Other articles I checked out only said $13 million and did not state that it was a yearly salary. Or, maybe as you said, it is really in yen.

I was joking about the yen, that'd be only $160K or so.

But over the full 6.5 years sounds more plausible.

that's what I was thinking when I read the amount. Still and all, $2MM/year is a good chunk of change.

I wasn't joking around, the conversion rate is around $1 = 82 yen, so 13 million yen = $160K or so

:)

The 6 year thing makes a lot more sense.
