Some of you see the big numbers at the top of this list and say "good, those are huge overpays", when in fact that's literally the market. We just choose not to shop in that market.

$60 million a year for Tucker. Crazy schnizzle. Is he really worth $42 million a year more than Josh Naylor? Is he worth twice as much as Schwarber or Olonso? Is he worth five times as much as Arreaz or 6 times as much as Bader?

I agree with you - this is the market. It's just that the market, in general, is really f.ucked up right now. I don't know if it is the Dodgers and Mets that are making it that way, but it is really f.ucked up.

That is the difficulty in looking solely at one offseason's worth of spending to determine how cheap a team is. Not all teams are going to need to spend top 5 or 10 money to be competitive. Now that doesn't mean I'm saying the Giants are a competitive team but just measuring by offseason spending, and not taking into account the overall salary of the team is a bit shortsighted.

That being said, the Giants being the 12th overall team by total salary isn't necessarily a good look either. Maybe not cheap, but are the Giants in the 12th largest MLB market? Is that money being used effectively to buy the 12th best, or better, team in the MLB? Not sure that it is. Giants seem to have the 15th or 16th best roster (just spitballing here. Maybe they have the 12th best roster) but the 2026 season will bear out whether that is true or not.

Not trying to critique your list. That is a lot of work and pretty impressive. Simply pointing out that one shouldn’t get depressed about the direction of one’s team simply by the position of the team on this list. Kudos to you for putting this list together!

Agreed. If they make the WC, they are appropriately spending and effective in managing the org. If they don't, one could argue they are OVERspending for the product produced. 12th best team = playoffs.

Could be one of the reasons the Giants aren't doing much...why sign guys when you might just have no games next year. Figure it out for whatever the rules are after.

I think you’re right here. I also think they want to build slow and beat the dodgers when their core has aged. Obviously sucks for Chappy and Webb (and others), but that’s what I think.
