Robbie Grossman hit a 3 Run HR in the win.

Yeah..... "solid" is an appropriate adjective. The Pirates' page at MLB.com used the same adjective, headlining their story as "Cole solid in first Double-A start."

Unfortunately, the Post Gazette story headlines with "Cole lights out in Altoona debut." In my view, "lights out" is a totally inappropriate description and creates a misleading headline..... which is especially inappropriate for a professional sportswriter. When I read that a starting pitcher was "lights out," I expect perhaps to see a complete game, low-hit win, or a guy pitching particularly effectively late into the game..... or maybe even giving up 0 or 1 run over 6 innings or so. But two earned runs on 5 hits in 5 innings is NOT "lights out." Heck, it's not even a "quality start," under THAT dubious definition. An ERA of 3.60 is NOT "lights out." Decent..... solid..... but NOT "lights out." It was a good start for Cole at AA, and I especially like that he didn't walk anyone.

But shame on the author for inappropriate use of a superlative.

I heard from someone who was there that only one of those five hits was well struck.

In the writers defense, a section of lights actually went out while Cole was warming up for the 5th inning, hence, the "lights out" headline. However, I agree that it is not a true description of the start for Cole.

I'm usually more interested in the K/BB and groundballs, grade A job on two out of three.
