Game day, 6pm start on FDS and ESPN+. Not sure what I'll do for dinner, all weekend was go go go so staying in sounds good.
Nothing new to report, expect the same lineup from Saturday that produced 6 goals. But we know Jill and if there aren't immediate results the line blender will come out of the kitchen cabinet stat. Kuemper to start, Moverare, Malott and Helenius scratches.
I was disappointed he wasn't named one of the three stars but after I watched the Hawks replay, Laferriere was a beast all night. That dude seems to have found another level recently and is playing far above his third round pick status. Rewind to 2023 and I said this dude will be a gamer, J Dub 2.0 and he is showing it. He has that it factor about him, everything we had hoped Buster would be. Laferriere will be wearing a letter at some point in his Kings career, book it. Buster will not, book that too.
Granted two different types of players, Laferriere is more direct, north south, crashes the net, minimal showboating and nothing fancy - knows his role, capabilities and plays to them. His compete level is off the charts though and that's where the big difference between he and Buster is. One guy hustles, one guy coasts and still thinks he's in the OHL and will dominate. You all know what Yoda said, there is no try, there is do or do not. Expect Laferriere to make an impact again tonight especially on the forecheck.
On the Utah front, Vanacek expected to start and we will see our turnover buddy Durzi. Their 1C is Schmaltz who's name has been out there as possible trade bait. Keep an eye on him, and Peterka is on his wing who is having a solid season. Cooley is always a threat and Crouse plays a physical brand of hockey and won't hesitate to finish a check.
Interesting note, they already have four 10+ goal scorers with Cooley sitting at 9, LA has one in Fiala with Kempe sitting at 9. That is depth scoring, what Holly was shooting for and what the Kings philosophy has been for years with no game breaker or superstar. Again, see Yoda.
Team wise Utah is 11th on offense and 15th on defense in the league, the Kings are going to get their chances. The Kings rank 3rd on defense but even with the touchdown minus the extra point still rank 29th on offense. Kind of tells you how bad it's been putting pucks in the net when popping 6 goals still kept you at that spot.
On special teams Utah ranks 28th on the PP and 9th on the PK while LA ranks 31st on the PP and 19th on the PK. The Utah PP and Kings PK kind of cancel each other out but the advantage will be with UT should the Kings get a PP. Need more Kuzmenko magic to have it make a difference.
This is the first game of a quick two game trip for LA, Mammoth tonight and Seattle on Wednesday and then back home to LA against the Flames on Saturday.
They seem to play better on the road but Utah just came off a 2-4 road trip and will be looking to right the ship at home in front of fans so prediction: Mormons 5-2. Kings goals by Laferriere and Doughty.
