I would argue that maybe it isn’t.

The Cavs got to contend the last year of LeBron’s contract.

And then when he left in free agency, they bottomed out, rebuilt, and it led directly to a title when LeBron resigned.

OKC has managed to build a champion going the other route, but I can’t think of too many others.

Was Jerry calling the shots when the Clippers made that trade with OKC? I hate to think ill of him lol...

Bet they wish they knew Durant would go to get something for him.

as to Lebron? That's a tough one as a guy like him not even sure you move on even if you know just get 1 more year......but would have been nice to be allowed to decide for themselves as might have gotten a bit of a haul for him.

I don’t think much chance the haul they would have gotten would have exceeded the value of the picks they got from being terrible for a couple years.

Couldn't we have had both? The haul from the deal and still maybe gotten good picks for being bad?
