Excerpt

It’s not a given that recently signed safety Duke Ihenacho will start ahead of second-year player Bacarri Rambo or get appreciable playing time in in Sunday’s home-opener against Jacksonville, coaches indicated this week.
Coach Jay Gruden said that Ihenacho was fully fit Thursday but deferred to the defensive staff on the extent to which the former Denver strong safety would be used.
“It’s just a matter of how Coach [Jim] Haslett and Raheem [Morris] feel about him mentally moving forward,” Gruden said. “I think right now they feel confident that he can step in there and play a lot of reps and not have any issues. Whether or not he’ll play in front of [Bacarri] Rambo and how many will be determined, probably [Friday] or Saturday.”

Keith:
Ryan, the Redskins and Jaguars played at the same time in Week 1, so there probably aren’t too many people who saw both games. But even from afar (or on DVR-delay), it was easy to tell Jacksonville had two very different halves in the opener against the Eagles. What stood out to me is that the 17-0 lead wasn’t a fluke at all. Both touchdowns were set up by strip-sacks on Nick Foles. The Redskins had issues protecting Robert Griffin III last week. A lot, but not all, of it was due to J.J. Watt, a talent superior to anyone the Jaguars will send at Griffin this week. Still, do you think the Jags’ rush could give the Washington offense some trouble?

Ryan:
Watching the Jaguars game in person and then on replay several times, and then watching Redskins-Texans, I would be stunned if the Jaguars aren’t able to establish a decent pass rush on Sunday. Granted, Griffin is more mobile than Foles appeared to be, but the Jaguars’ speed rushers (Chris Clemons, Andre Branch, Ryan Davis, etc.) will be able to harass Griffin. After being sacked five times in the first half, Foles and the Eagles went to a short passing game (football out of his hands in two seconds) to account for that pass rush.

Gruden said the plan is to “strike fast and strike early” so that the Redskins’ 12th man can be a factor throughout the game – just like the Texans’ home crowd was able to establish its presence against the Redskins Week 1 in Houston.

“(We need to) try to get the home field in our corner and make it very difficult on Jacksonville's offense,” Gruden said. “We learned that first hand last week, how hard it is as an offense when the crowd’s into the game on every snap. With the crowd noise, the snap count becomes more difficult.”

Gruden on Thursday also ruled cornerback Tracy Porter – who also has an injured hamstring – out for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

Thursday’s injury report also included kicker Kai Forbath (right groin; limited in practice), safety Duke Ihenacho (ankle, full participation), linebacker Akeem Jordan (knee; did not practice), outside linebacker Brian Orakpo (ankle; limited participation), offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus (ankle; full participation) and left tackle Trent Williams (shoulder; full participation).

*first time I noticed Kai had a groin injury again...

He prefers nose tackle: At 6-foot-2, 335 pounds, Baker is well suited to playing inside. But it's also his more natural position, the one he was playing before moving to end. They put him out there because he was starting to play well and they wanted him on the field.
Now he returns inside.

"I'm built like a nose tackle rather than an end," he said. "I've always had the athleticism to play end so it was an easy transition for me."

As expected...

Excerpt

But Reed, the tight end who has shown both tantalizing skill and extreme fragility during his brief Redskins career, left after just seven snaps with what is being described as a “moderate” hamstring pull that could sideline RGIII’s best safety valve for several weeks.

That means the onus will fall on a couple of familiar faces — Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen — to fill Reed’s shoes, beginning with Sunday’s home opener against Jacksonville.

Some hope if for some reason we don't stretch the field as much as we'd like to see...

Some perspective on Rambo...

Excerpt

Many things went wrong, including a blown assignment by another defensive back. Rambo didn’t deserve all the blame, Haslett said. “He played 54 plays and had two bad plays,” Haslett said. “It just happened to be a bad, bad play. It’s unfortunate. He had 52 other plays that were pretty darn good.

I was thinking the same thing on Rambo. It's not like he was screwing up the entire game. But damn that was a huge screw up. Not the missed tackle, by then he was done. It was his reaction to the pass when he literally ran in the complete wrong direction. That was just hard to understand

Excerpt

John Keim:

A big key will be first downs on both sides of the ball. The Redskins' offense faced third-and-5 or more on nine of 12 third downs, converting only three of 12. Also, protection will be an issue. Of Jacksonville's five sacks last week, three occurred within 2.4 seconds of the snap or less. Finally, Jacksonville missed 14 tackles Sunday; the Redskins have a running back who makes defenders miss in Alfred Morris and two receivers who do the same in DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon. It will help -- as long as, that is, the Redskins protect the ball. Redskins 17, Jaguars 14

Michael DiRocco:

The Jaguars are getting a break this week because the Redskins are dealing with injuries that directly impact two of the Jaguars' biggest weaknesses: running the ball and covering the tight end. The Redskins are going to be without nose tackle Barry Cofield because of a high ankle sprain, and tight end Jordan Reed (hamstring) likely won't play. Philadelphia's tight ends burned the Jaguars for six catches for 92 yards. Some of that came while safety Johnathan Cyprien was in the game. He left late in the first half with a concussion and is unlikely to play in Washington. Jaguars 20, Redskins 17
