I saw this yesterday. Not sure if it is they are just going to try him out at the position or if this is a done deal kind of thing. I will say I like the OT class at the end of round 1 a lot more than the Center/Guard prospects at that point so wouldn't mind seeing us move Franklin in then pick up a guy like Morgan Moses or the kid from Alabama (if his knee checks out) as that could be a big time OL with I think Clady being the smallest guy of them all at like 320.
I tank a lot of fans anticipated this move. I think it was even mentioned a couple offseasons ago. Some writers have mentioned that Franklin's biggest strengths lie in run-blocking, and can struggle when blocking on an 'island', I.e. the Superbowl.
They will most likely give Chris Clark the RT position. He did have a shaky start when first taking over at LT last season, but played well down the stretch of season. So maybe the Pre-draft O-line is looking like: LT Clady, LG Franklin, C Ramirez, RG Vasquez, RT C. Clark
He also though sucks at pulling which is one of the main duties of a LG. So unless we are changing up our blocking scheme I just don't see this as our best decision. He is a top 5 RT in this league. Just don't think you mess with that
Top 5? Sure did not look like it in the SB. To be fair, no one in orange looked good.
I am fine with letting him try guard or keeping him at tackle. Either way we could use another lineman and hopefully the unit as a whole would be better.
Worth a shot, with the idea that we can always slide him back over to RT if it doesn't work.
I have a policy of never complaining when we draft Offensive Linemen, so it would not bother me one bit to see a couple drafted in the first 4 or 5 rounds this year.
I guess this means Clark won't be going anywhere. He had played so well towards the end of the year that I thought maybe we'd hang him out there before the draft to see if maybe we could net another 2nd rounder. We were kinda looking thin at guard though, so this makes sense if he can handle the position.
