While things are looking up for some of the better teams in Texas (3 teams with only one loss, 4 teams with only two losses; the bottom end of the spectrum features 4 teams from the Lonestar State:
UTEP is 0-6, with a loss to an FCS school;
Rice is 1-5, with its only win coming against FCS Prairie View;
Texas St. is 1-4, its only win coming against FCS Texas Southern;
and UTSA is 3-3, with its 3 victories coming against UTEP, Rice, and Texas St.

A half-step above that quartet is SMU, which is 2-4, with a victory against Navy & FCS Houston Baptist.

Well, it is a freaking big state that LOVES football.

I imagine there are more college and high school football teams in Texas than in any other state in the US. I could even see them doubling up any other state in football teams in either High School or College or even both. I have no stats to back that up though.

Still more wins than the state of Nebraska.

Texas has 12 FBS teams. The next closest is Ohio with 8, followed by a tie between California, Florida, and North Carolina with 7 each.

California used to be right up there with Texas before Fullerton St., Pacific, and Long Beach St. all dropped their programs & Texas added some FCS move-ups.

UTEP is with a 1st year head coach, and I think they dropped the ball. Instead of hiring a spread offensive coach with West Texas ties like Sonny Combie (TCU OC) they go get the Kansas state OC.

Rice also has a 1st year head coach, I don't know a thing about him.

Texas state just has the wrong coach, and they are stuck in the sun belt while their recruiting rivals are all in CUSA together (UTSA, Rice, UTEP, North Texas)

UTSA made the same mistake UTEP did, hired Frank Wilson from LSU. He recruits well for that division, but his offenses are horrible. At one point Frank Wilson was on short lists for P5 jobs, now he'll just be the mistake that lingers for UTSA.

And, on the FCS level, Texas, New York & Pennsylvania each have 8 schools apiece, but New York will take the lead when D-1 non-FB LIU-Brooklyn & D-2 LIU-Post merge to become Long Island University, with the FB team moving up to FCS level between 2019 & 2023.

North Carolina currently has 7 FCS teams, with Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, & Virginia fielding 6 each.

To expand on this:
Texas has 12 FBS teams of which 4 are P5
Ohio has 8 FBS teams of which 1 is P5
California has 7 FBS teams of which 4 are P5
Florida has 7 FBS teams of which 3 are P5
North Carolina has 7 FBS, 3 P5

The crazy one for me is New York. The 4th biggest state in the country but only 3 FBS teams 1 P5.

I'll say one thing for sure, it's unreal that Texas State has an enrollment of over 39,000 students and about 112 of them were at their game last night.

Can’t blame the students, I too was highly disappointed when I found out they weren’t called the Armadillos.

Texas has 5 P5 schools, Baylor still counts for now.

I see my mistake. I was looking at a list of FBS schools in Texas and was counting the B12 teams. I left off A&M (SEC). Whoooooops.

That's ok, a&m does feel like the oddball in the state since they're not in the big 12. They really need to play at least 1 of the other P5 schools yearly to keep some sort of Texas identity.

I read somewhere that Texas State wouldn't let them use their name because they didn't want people associating them with 1985 SMU. I don't know how true that is though.

Nobody in the entire Northeast seems to want to play football. In all of New England, 6 states with 15 million people living in them, there are two schools who barely qualify as FBS (UConn, UMass) and then the next best schools are the IVY league.
