not sure about the boots yet. I know I don't want felt bottoms, but I don't know if I need to get the heavy duty boots.

I was looking at just getting something like these

garbage.

Just wash your gear. The whole felt debate is nonsense. There are plenty of places in your waders for invasive species to get stuck in.

Unless you are traveling all over the country to fish, I say felt is fine, and grips way better than those turds above.

@ill

I bought a pair of these Hodgemans neoprene boots back in the spring for fly fishing and UL trout fishing. Not comfortable at first, but added some inserts from an old pair of Nikes for arch support. Now really comfortable like tennis shoes. I wear a 10 1/2 in regular shoes. I ordered a pair of 11s and used a size 10 1/2 inserts. Got them off of eBay for $35. Haven't used my felt bottoms since. Much lighter weight than boots. Makes a big difference if you're climbing up and down river banks all day.

felt is not allowed in MD, so I will likely get hard soles...with studs

Felt-Soled Boot Restrictions in the States and the Spread of Invasives | CSG Knowledge Center

Administrative ban on the use of felt in all Maryland waters, adopted in 2011.

Ugh. Fucking hippies. Lulz.

I only wear waders in the winter/spring/late Fall and early mornings anyway. Rest the time, I don't even wear "fishing boots". Sandals with a good heel strap. I do wear neoprene water socks, but mostly to protect muh toes from stubbing em' on rocks.

As I stated already, I think the felt deal is a bit overblown, as waders in general have plenty of places for invasive species to hide and thrive, and it almost encourages a false sense of security in not washing the rest of your gear.

It was considered here at one point, but they shelved it.

It's interesting to note, that in MANY places that I have fished over the years, the vast majority of invasive species present were put there by the same fruit baskets making all the rules.

I prefer my felt soles waders in most bottoms, but my lug-soled ones do give better traction on large rocky river bottims.

I have been scoping our locations in western MD and likely to use a guided trip since this will be my first time doing anything like this. I am excited.

I am also looking at streams in central PA since I am going up there for my college 15 yr reunion in May or June. There are some solid locations out there where the streams are stocked nicely.

Understood. Had a "conversation" with a landowner about that once.
If he was a native, and you weren't being a cunt, I'll presume it went well.

I can't speak for the douchebag Californians that are buying up the place.

don't know where he originated from, but his place was on the Mitchell Slough just outside Missoula. He obviously didn't understand the term "High water mark". If you know the area, we were just upstream from Huey Lewis' place.

Drew a permit to float The Smith River this year.

4-night, 5-day float. 57 miles with ostensibly only one put-in and one take-out.
