2017 was not the best of times in College Station. The Aggies had Kevin Sumlin for a head coach, but Johnny Manziel was no longer around and Texas A&M was gonna need a spark, something that could get their 2017 campaign started off on a promising note. They needed a game that would serve notice to everyone just how things were gonna go for the rest of the season. Unfortunately their season opener in Pasadena turned out to be just that and not in a way they liked.

Over in Los Angeles, UCLA was gearing up for a possible make or break season for the program with Jim L. Mora as head coach. A good start to the season could set things up for how the rest of it would go. Well, it turns out that didn't happen, but then again the Bruins were a split personality for the 2017 campaign. Unbeatable at home, just the opposite away from it.

That brings us to the Rose Bowl stadium which has hosted Super Bowls, a World Cup Final, and of course the Rose Bowl itself. It's also where this happened. This is a game of inconsistency by a pair of teams with coaches who turned out to be treading on thin ice. By the end of the season, both Sumlin and Mora would be gone and both teams would suffer losses in their respective Bowl games with interim head coaches.

Still, this crazy little contest is worth revisiting. It involves a 34 point comeback complete with an Aggies meltdown and a Bruins team being given the most damning of gifts, false hope. Gus Johnson is on play-by-play.
