I'll never forget the excitement of a 5 pound bass in a pond not much bigger than a swimming pool hit a little fly popper on the ded still surface at sunset. Wow!
I also enjoy watching a 40 pound dolphin (fish) do a tailwalk while stripping most of the line off your reel......

Nice. I did fish for mahi mahi off the outerbanks and striper fishing in the Chesapeake Bay (we call stripers rock fish in Maryland). You are right, it's fun to catch bigger fish, and with salt water you don't seem to get shut out often. But trolling is not the same as casting to the perfect spot and getting rewarded and nothing to me beats a lake looking like glass at sunset to the choppy salt water where you are bobbing and weaving.

The fun part of bass fishing is the homework and preparation in finding them. The studying of contour maps and weather to figure out exactly where they will be. Finding the bass is everything. They're aggressive predators. If you can find them chances are you can catch them.

Now if you're stuck on the shore the maps don't mean a whole lot. You fish where you have access.

For those of you who like stream fishing, I highly suggest you try kayak fishing (any small human-powered vessel actually) in shallow rivers. It's a whole other world you get to touch.
