The New York Jets proved the NFL adage that if you have two quarterbacks, you have none, as poor play from both Geno Smith and Michael Vick left the offense once again stagnant in 2014. The defensive front seven was an area of strength, but the overall lack of talent on this roster shined through as the team stumbled to a last-place finish in the AFC East.

Due in part to those struggles, the team fired head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik on Monday, which is where we get started as we look ahead to the club's next steps.

Here are four areas of focus for the Jets this offseason:

1. Hire replacements at head coach, GM

The Jets have to make an organizational decision on whom they want to oversee their future. Would the team target an offensive-minded coach to bolster that side of the football? The Jets also must decide how they want to structure the head coach/GM arrangement. Will the general manager have control over the roster and be able to hire his head coach of choice, or will the team pursue a head coach first and allow him final personnel say?

The talent on the defensive front seven provides a good starting point, but there are critical needs at several other spots on the roster.

2. Decide how to approach the QB issue

The market for surefire starting quarterbacks available this offseason is, well, minimal. If Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston declare for the draft and are available when the Jets pick at No. 6 overall, does the team consider either? Or, as Todd McShay suggested as a possibility in an article Monday, would the Jets consider trading up a few spots to draft one of the two?

The free-agent market is slim, rendering the Jets' options few and far between.

3. Keep Harvin or part ways?

The midseason move to acquire Percy Harvin was bold, but inexpensive from a compensation standpoint (a fourth- to sixth-round pick based on production). Harvin has no guaranteed money left on his contract, but he is due $10.5 million in 2015 if he remains on the roster. Is that price tag too steep for a player who had three games with one catch or fewer after being acquired? It's a fair question, especially given that Harvin has reportedly worn out his welcome at his previous NFL stops. The Jets might be better-served looking to the draft or free agency to add playmakers.

4. Extend Wilkerson

There aren't a whole lot of players on this roster who are surefire building blocks, but defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson is. The team exercised the 2015 option on his contract in the last offseason, but extending the versatile, explosive and productive defensive lineman should be a priority.

Not impressed with Winston or Mariota....it will been Geno Smith all over again....I would look at Sean Mannion the Oregon State QB...Big boy...6'4..240 lbs....2nd or 3rd round pick...cannon for an arm....seems ready to run a pro offense....just MHO....
