watkins!!! Buffalo traded up to get a number one WR... Ebron still has to compete for balls with Calvin Johnson...

This might not be as obvious as it looks.

Watkins should score more points, but he is no slam dunk to produce in Buffalo as a rookie. Ebron could prove more valuable as a TE than Watkins is as a WR.

This is the exact reason why I think it might just be Ebron. The Lions may have finally found their #2 weapon to take some heat off of mega. Might be too easy for defenses to key on Watkins, and he may not be ready to beat double teams.

tlance that is how i should have phrased the question. That's what i want to know. Who holds more value. WRs score so there are many to chose from, TEs do't there are only a handful that produce. So the question is who will be more valuable?

maybe, but then again its all about value, unless you feel good having a TE as your flex, most teams will only be starting one TE so having a top 12 TE is all that really matters... I believe ebron will be good and will likely be a top 12 TE but is his relative value significant yet??

Watkins is the number one receiver for a bad team... he will get the looks... and buffalo as bad as they can be, they have the backs for defenses to focus on, and a good young QB... watkins has higher potential to be a more significant role in fantasy football...

Hope that made sense in writing...

I think Watkins will be a better #3 WR than Ebron will be a #1 TE. I don't think Ebron will be in the top 12 when it's all done either. Just too many mouths to feed with Tate and Pettigrew and... wait, okay only three, but Calvin's mouth is HUGE!

Seriously though, I think if he gets Eiffert's numbers from last year he'll be doing well.

Watkins, while I don't think will lead the team in catches (Robert Woods), I think he could easily have a handful of explosive games, like Demaryius Thomas explosive. Obviously he'll be inconsistent, but I wouldn't be surprised if he'll make you think of whether or not to start him or Torrey Smith, come November.

I'll be surprised if Ebron catches 50 passes and has 5TDs. (CJ didn't do either as a rook). Id imagine Watkins has more success numbers wise.

Watkins, just because he will get more targets and opportunity and be on the field more. Maybe in the next year or two it evens out though. Once DET ditches Pettigrew and Ebron has the position to himself. Also - DET's TE2 has been awfully productive lately:
2013 Fauria 7TDs
2012 Scheffler 42rec 500+yds, 1TD
2011 Scheffler nabs 6TDs in what is easily Pettigrew's best season 83/777/5

Pettigrew looks a lot better if half those stats sucked up by the secondary TE go to him.

so maybe we see Ebron and Pettigrew out there a lot together and Ebron can solidify that joker TE spot similar to Hernandicide. But I'll stick with Watkins, as far as being a better fantasy option in this season.

Thanks everyone for your excellent opinions. Tlance I think I am going to follow your thinking in fact that is exactly why I asked this question to see if there was remotely anyone who thought that.

A TE with a true receiving skill set playing along the best wr in the game with a new Offensive coach who comes strait from NO and who has claimed he will use Ebron like Graham was used is hard not to take over a great WR with wr3 wr2 or even WR1 potential his first year. Even if Watkins is the next AJ green I'd still rather take a gamble of getting the possible next Jimmy Graham. Well jimmy graham numbers anyway.

The question is. "Is an elite WR worth as much or more than an elite TE. I say no when there are probably a good 12 to 15 elite wrs and only 3 or 4 elite TEs. That's not saying either Watkins or Ebron will be elite just that if they both are I would think TE would be a little more valuable.

Would love to hear from more of you experts on this.

Graham and Gronk and even Gates when he was the best, were all the number one receiver on their team... So they all got insane numbers... Look more at a Vernon davis... He is an elite TE but he is on a team with other weapons... He gets very good stats, but is not of same value as top WR...

Then it depends on the league, if it is 12 teams or less the chances are nobody will use a TE at flex regularly... and most owners are hesitant to draft a second TE before their 3rd RB and 4th WR... so to get a top 12 TE on draft day is much easier than to get a top 12 WR...

Ebron, will at best be the 3rd weapon for the Lions this season behind Bush and megatron
Watkins will at best be the 2nd weapon on the team behind the running game...

Well honestly its mainly Stafford. He has always targeted Megatron even when Burleson, Young, Broyles, pettigrew was on the field. Also the lions did do a TE by committee and never truly utilized Pettigrew as a clear starter. Stafford has not done well spreading the ball around and Lombardi did not call the plays. Idk if I want Ebron as my starting tightend because of the recent history of Stafford. As for Watkins he's going to be the no.1 receiver on the team. I don't believe Woods was the go-to receiver last year as much as others because Johnson drew top CBs the weeks Woods did well. And surely you would already have a starting receiver or two before drafting Watkins so he's a valuable no.3/ matchup spot start with the potential of being a no.1. And Watkins has some offensive matchups on the schedule next year and the big defensive matchups he could get garbage time against such as Denver and now pats so bills could be in some blowout situations. I like Watkins more and am thinking on taking a chance on him as the 2nd receiver drafted.

I agree, Brees, that Watkins will be the number one, but Woods was our go to/best WR last year. E.J. always looked to him first. In the games Stevie actually played in, he was mainly used out of the slot so he was not followed around by anyone. The chemistry was just there for Manuel and Woods, Stevie was already done last year and I am shocked we turned him into Bryce Brown.

I work with a huge Bills fan - he is saying the same (which is why I took Woods in Coma).
He's thinking Watkins takes a season or two before blowing up, and that Woods has a good shot to lead them in WR stats this year, especially with EJ running the show.

Remember, Woods was a rookie himself just last season. Give the guy some time to develop. He could be a great possession receiver opposite Watkins for years. EJ also looks/throws to Woods a lot cause he can run the short routes well.

Watkins. Easily Watkins 100 times over. Show me a TE that was fantasy relevant in his first year and I might change my mind, but most likely not.
