Thanks to Bill James and other sabermetricians, ERA isn't as valued of a stat as it was 40 years ago. But, it is still a stat in which the winner (he with the lowest qualifying ERA) gets instant recognition.

But, the minimum number of innings a pitcher must throw to qualify for the ERA crown (162) has not changed in 100 years while the number of innings the average starting pitcher throws has been in steady decline for at least 35 years. Seems like it is time to lower the required number of innings a pitcher needs to qualify for the ERA title?

Eovaldi threw 140 IPs last year and had a 1.73 ERA. He should be the ERA champ in my book.

Yep. Pretty much. The 2026 season will probably be the first year when the guy who leads the league in IPs will throw less than 200 innings. You know that Nolan Ryan is calling them all pussies.

At the rate we're going, Rich Harden and Clay Buchholz will be calling pitchers pussies in the future

I've been calling them all pussies since they went to 5 man rotations. Bring back Billy Martin!

I would pay money to watch Billy Martin’s reaction to when some nerd walked in with his Microsoft Surface and told him what his pitching lineup is and their pitch counts are.
