It's raw, you donkey!
If you've got an interest in some of the battles for a job going on, post who ya think is gonna win and why!
I'll start with the triangle I've been watching from the start: Astros 1B job. AJ Reed, Jon Singleton and Tyler White (with Matt Duffy as another dark horse) have been fighting for the job. White has been the clear Spring Training winner, batting .344, with AJ Reed at .250, while Singleton has been doing badly, hitting .143.
The word is that Reed is gonna get sent down to get a little more seasoning, so it's basically between White and Singleton at this point, unless Duffy (.219) sneaks in.
My Prediction (and it breaks my heart): Singleton gets the job to begin the season. White will either get sent down or possibly make the club as a bench player...or a trade can always happen.
Singleton will make it for two reasons. #1 is the contract. No matter what Hinch says about money not mattering, we all know it does. The Astros, imho, will keep Singleton plugging away in hopes that he can either turn it around well enough to justify their faith or to make him desirable in a trade.
Why not White? The conception that he does not hit for enough power at a corner position combined with a lack of pedigree (at least in terms of draft) dooms him. Don't know if it's right or wrong (I lean towards wrong), but I've been rooting for White all spring. I just think that Singleton will become the placeholder at 1B while Reed gets a little more fine tuning.
Hope I'm wrong, tho.
