Yeah that was the next thing I wasn't sure about if they did recoup that money they could then flip it around and sign like 4-5 undrafted young players to the practice squad. Also if there was a tone you want to set in the locker room because as a boss if you let employees get away with things that will effect the rest of the locker room. Its hard to give a hard opinion without knowing all the facts all we know (or I know) there was an ATV accident, after he recovered he wanted to play and his own doctors cleared him, Seattle staff didn't clear him, and it seems like his career is over so the hawks cut him.
Now this is where I defend him, is Malik an asshole? probably atleast it seems that way. But this is all stemming from that ATV accident/injury which unfortunately these things happen. This is no different if Doug Baldwin would have slide at Richard shermans softball game head first into home plate and breaking his face. If you think Malik shouldn't get any of his bonus money only because of his ATV accident but think the steelers should have taken care of Big Ben during his Motorcycle accident then you need to reevaluate your definition of fairness.
Unless there was a clause in Maliks contract that talks about operating a vehicle without a helmet
