That's a whack of cabbage...

"We are told Doughty’s agents, Don Meehan and Mark Guy, have the LA Kings’ most recent offer. From what we are told, this may do it although, as of right now, it is not signed. It’s an offer, nothing more. There is no final “deal” yet. I told you earlier that there are 2 potential offers on the table, one for 9 years and one for 7. I have now learned that the 7 year deal may be the winner and it comes in at or about $52 million. At $52 million, that is a staggering $7.42 million per season cap hit.

Yeah, seems high given that Weber only got $7.5M through arbitration.

And I'd take Weber over Doughty every time.

Agreed. I understand that he'll hit his prime toward the end of it and may be worth it then, but I would think a $5.5 mil cap hit would be fair.

As one of two Kings fans on this board, I believe I speak for both of us:hurt::drink::eek::jaw:
If this is true Mr Doughty better start proving he is worth it. No coming to camp out of shape: no coming to practice hung over.

Sorry to go off-topic, but how's Scuderi been looking? Living up to the money? They don't show a lot of Kings games in the East and especially not in Atlanta.

Scuds is doing very well. I would say best D-man on the team (defensively). You rarely hear his name because he is never out of place and doesn't take the bad penalty. He gets paired with Jack Johnson a lot and JJ sometimes makes bad choices and Scuderi has to save his butt. He is the perfect player for the role he has been given. Same as Willie Mitchel and Drew.

Still thinking this contract is high by 3 or 4 mil.

Glad to hear it about Scuds.

Back to the topic - The money is the first thing that pops out. After that it's the length. I would think the Kings would something in the 3-5 year range based on that much money. Doughty probably won't command that much at the end of it, so the Kings can get that number down. Arbitration sounds like a decent option here, even though it hurts the relationship between the two parties.

The issue is Drew is an UFA in 4 years. Three years favors the Kings and 4-5 years favors Drew. I think (assuming this is true) that the buying the 3 years of UFA is what is costing so much. Also you can only insure a contract for 7 years so this helps the Kings if Drew gets injured. After Stamkos and Weber got paid 7.5 it set the bar high for Drew to get the same. I am still having a hard time thinking that the dollar amount is true.

Definitely seems high. But at least they are balancing that with some value in a guy like Scuderi. I think with most teams you have to overpay guys from time-to-time to hold on to them and you try to balance it with some value contracts. It's a good signing for the short term and the Kings are a legit contender. The question comes in 3-4 years down the road. If the cap rises enough or Doughty is great (or both), it's a good contract. If not, could lead to cap issues in a few years. Time will tell.

the whole Doughty missing the team bus for the olympic gold medal game story includes a rumour that he played that game hungover

he needs to bare down and become a pro because being a boy-wonder can only take you so far (... ask 210!!!)

Book it! Yeah, we're booking things again.

lol...The thing is Phaneuf had a pretty good 2nd half for the Leafs next season and you know Dion's Hollywood's girlfriend wouldn't mind a move to LA. I wouldn't make that swap if I were Dean Lombardi, but at least you're locked in for the next four years at a set dollar amount.

Posted in Kings section but here as well
no truth to rumor
per helene (an actual NHL HOF reporter) no true to above
Twitter
Drew Doughty's agent, Don Meehan, says reports of any deal in place w/Kings are not true. "no not at all. certainly not true." says Doughty training every day in London...and that he hasn't talked to Kings' Lombardi or Jeff Solomon since mid-July.
Dean Lombardi declines comment but clearly no deal in any semblance betwen Kings and Doughty.
