For all of his detractors.... the guy is always making heady plays. Forget the huge fumble causing hit and knocking Pierre Thomas out cold against the saints in the playoffs.... Yesterday Whitner had a great play knocking Finley out of bounds when he not only would have made the catch at around the 2 yard line but he may have very well had a TD. Then at the end of the game he sliced across and kept Cobb from going out of bounds and kept the clock moving. That was a very good play.

And Speaking of detractors..... where are all those fools that said Eric Reid will never be a FS? That was about as a solid of a rookie FS debut as there is. No other rookie safety looked as good that I saw besides Kenny Vaccaro who had a nice game. And as far as I am concerned he had two picks.

I think Whitner is a very good football player, just playing in the wrong era. If he played in the 80s and 90s when defenses could use true Strong Safeties he could've possibly been a HoF consideration (probably not make it, but his name would come up). He wouldn't be exposed in the passing game that much and could focus on what he does best...making aggressive tackles and stopping the run. But in today's game with the high-flying passing attacks and player safety rules it really plays to his weaknesses.

That being said, I think he had a solid game yesterday and although he was weak in coverage he did make up for it with some of the solid plays that you mentioned. I hope he can continue to minimize his coverage mistakes and have a solid season for us.

for years now you read about Coaches saying 'interchangeable' Safeties. today's NFL Safeties have to tackle AND cover, so the SS versus FS is easily over played. there is a difference per individual player, but its not large.

Whitner is a smart player no doubt and his leadership will be hard to replace but he is just too short and he isn't very good in coverage.
