Not that we didn't see this coming. According to TSN...

Sources tell TSN that the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to name Dion Phaneuf as the club's 17th captain next week.

The team is holding a press conference on Monday, where the club says it will make an announcement and unveil a new Maple Leafs sweater.

Toronto has been without a captain since Mats Sundin did not re-sign with the team after the 2007-08 season. The club also went without a captain for three seasons between 1986 and 1989.

Last season, Tomas Kaberle, Mike Komisarek, Francois Beauchemin, and Phaneuf were each alternate captains for the Maple Leafs.

He played very well for Toronto and looked like the right man for the job.

4 more years, at a salary ranging from $7m to 5.5m

and if that's the 'face of your franchise', you's in deep shit.
/ugly joke, as well as a stab at his lack of character (me , me, me!).

I just don't see the point of putting all this pressure on Dion, he's not exactly the most media savvy/friendly guy to start with. Those jackals like Simmonds and Cox are frothing at the mouth.

certainly a backhanded compliment:
Few athletes radiate obvious leadership qualities, and Phaneuf certainly isn’t one of those who does. .........

He was a captain once before in peewee hockey, and not since. Not with the Southgate Lions of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Not in four years with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League. Not in two stints with the national junior team. Not in Calgary with the Flames, a team that had a strong captain in Jarome Iginla, a young man who reeks of leadership in a way Phaneuf never could.

I like it :D

Beauchemin should have been made captain in my opinion. Respected, gritty player who has won a cup while playing a key role.

Dion will always think he's captain anyway, so it's not like this is going to give him a confidence boost or anything.

Burke throws all Leafs veterans under the bus...

Over the timeframe of almost two years we felt that we didn't have anybody that could match up historically with previous captains. To my right are three of the greatest captains in Maple Leaf history (Armstrong, Sittler, Clark). We have basically a wall of history in our dressing room right now where all the greatest leaders in Maple Leaf history are commemorated. Lots of great pictures. We felt that we didn't have a player until the last couple of months of last season who would be able to be worthy of being a captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs."

Dion Phaneuf. Looking comfortable

9f1eacfa4cf0b250478820cdd474.jpeg

God I love this picture. Honestly, who sits like that?

Dion Phaneuf, the new captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, that's who. Looking and sounding about as comfortable during yesterday's press conference as a rookie being introduced to the media for the first time.

From Steve Simmons:

Dion Phaneuf had just completed his first official act as captain of the Maple Leafs, reading from his own prepared text, when he walked off the stage and located Pat Park, the club’s media-relations director.

“How was that?” Phaneuf asked, in need of an answer.

“Did I read it pretty good?”

Park assured him he had done just fine.

The newest captain of the Leafs, in his first moment wearing the C, needed to hear that.

Sounds like a confident dude.

Always felt Dion was overrated. Personally the only thing he is good for is big hits. His defense is suspect. With the C now though, prove me wrong Mr. Phaneuf. :)
