I think I'd rather have Arrieta

They can have him at that price. That's going to be a terrible back end of the contract.

Works for me. Cubs needed one more arm, why not him.

Eh. It's fine. Not really an upgrade over Arrieta but will still be a good rotation with Lester, Darvish, Quintana, Hendricks and Chatwood

that's a great rotation. Darvish/Quintana/Lester/Hendricks is a great 1-4 and Chatwood makes for a good #5 with considerable upside. Montgomery's a pretty good #6 guy as well, though the depth after that is questionable.

Arrieta was pretty meh last year. That 3.53 ERA was a bit lucky, not to mention he threw only 168.1 innings in 30 starts.

Needs better roids.

He's been pretty meh for 90% of his career imo.

He was pretty awesome from 2014-16, which make up for about half of the innings pitched in his career. I don't think he's been meh for 90% of his career. That being said, I also wouldn't expect 2014-16 Arrieta next season. His command has been pretty spotty the last couple of years, not to mention he's not getting swings outside the strike zone and swinging strikes like he used to.

90% is an exaggeration. But he's had more meh seasons than he hasn't. 2014 he was good, but very limited. That 2015 season stands out in almost every area. Great seasons do, but its extreme.

I don't disagree although I will say the IP was more a function of how Joe used the pen . Pretty much all Cub starters averaged about 6 IP per start . I guess my point is the debate between the 2 is at best even ( if you're Darvish ) on a career front and you probably could've got Jake for less but I may be wrong . In any event I think adding Chatwood at 5 is a jigger upgrade than replacing Jake with Darvish

Not to be argumentative but I think there are 2 ways of looking at this.
For the rest of the division catching up this year, this is the 500-pound gorilla that the Cubs need to stay in first place. Whatever that means to the back end of the contract seems pretty much like 'who gives a fuck' to us Reds fans who saw that chance to creep up just get washed down the river with one signing.

I don't get the fan attitude about the value of a contract when the top 4 or 5 teams will continue to dictate the league standings because they can afford to have a 'bad back end of a contract.'
Darvish, if he pitches, is worth 3 or 4 wins to this team.

It would be a bitch if they had 7 quality starters. After that, the depth would probably depend on the back end of the bullpen. As a Reds fan, this breaks my heart though I guess it's the way of life.

I compare this sort of pitcher to the Steve Stone phenomenon. Off and on, the gods of baseball are just right, and if a pitcher develops a new pitch, catches the league off guard, avoids a troublesome blister problem, maybe adjusts his personal life, loves his contract ... those are stars that don't align often for guys like Arrieta.

I think your standards for "meh" might just be far far higher than mine. I don't see Darvish's 2014 as a "meh" level season at all and I think you're expecting too much from starters if you do.

Edit: nevermind, I was reading your comment as if it was about Darvish. That's my mistake.

I acknowledged my mistake in the post you quoted. It seemed... I don't know, I can't think of a good adjective to describe what deleting it entirely seemed like to me. Should I have done that instead?

I hit the quote button before the edit was in, or I didn't see it one.
