Panthers acquired QB Sam Darnold from the Panthers in exchange for three draft picks.

The Panthers are sending a 2021 sixth-rounder New York's way before getting more serious in 2022, where they will be shipping off their second- and fourth-rounders. It's not much of a haul — future picks are inherently less valuable — but it's a lot better than nothing, with the second-rounder at least representing real draft capital. As part of the deal, the Panthers are exercising Darnold's (guaranteed for injury only) fifth-year team option for 2022. Darnold is an uninspired Teddy Bridgewater back-up plan after the Panthers put all their eggs in the Deshaun Watson basket, but they can convince themselves 24-year-old (in June) Darnold still has untapped upside. Picking eighth later this month, the move doesn't necessarily take the Panthers out of the running for a rookie signal caller, though they already know the top three quarterbacks will come off the board in the top three picks. Darnold arrives to challenge or usurp Bridgewater after a horrendous 2020 where he had more picks than passing scores. It's tough to properly evaluate Darnold considering the lack of offensive talent and coaching acumen around him in New York, but most players with a bright future would have already displayed some semblance of the ability to create instant offense by now. That being said, Panthers OC Joe Brady is on the short list of people you would want to try to turn Darnold around. Darnold should be considered the favorite to start in September.

I was never a Darnold fan, but it's amazing how the Jets just keep trading these top 10 picks year after year. MAYBE, you should look at your front office/coaching? I mean even when they hit on someone (Adams) they have to trade that away too LOL.

It's like some kid who is giddy about the NFL draft and "I WANT MORE PICKS!!" is running the show. I mean I could do that. And with that... I must pay homage...

You’re not wrong but they absolutely killed it on the Adams trade

Carolina could very well still pick a QB if Bridgewater does get traded. Use Darnold as a safety net OR they really believe in the kid to start. Why not give him a chance with a good HC and weapons

On paper theres not a huge difference between Bridgewater and Darnold however Darnold is the one with a far bigger upside.

These are the kind of deals/chances you take when you dont have a franchise QB. Chances are he wont be the answer but the cost to find out isnt a ton.

And while I get that those trashing Bridgewater are judging him on who he is now, just thought it appropriate to remind all of his injury that he amazingly came back from and how we will never truly know what he could have been.

Exactly why I wanted the Bears to go for Darnold over Dalton... We know for sure what Dalton is, but with Darnold there is hope that it was the Jets that sucked and not him.

Yeah Bears I know are in a spot where they basically have to win this year to save jobs. That makes it dangerous to expect all rational decisions. Dalton maybe is safer for this year but the ceiling is pretty clear.

I'm just glad the Bears landed on Dalton in the version of of musical chairs with QB's this offseason before Bridgewater became available.

Meh, I think would have kept Darnold around and snag what the Dolphins got. The Jets turn down

Sam Donald
2021 #12 pick
2021 3rd round
2022 1st round
2023 1st round

for
#2 QB
2021 2nd round
2022 4th round
2022 6th round.

No matter if you draft Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Jones or Lance, they won't succeed if you have no pieces to surround them with. This was a perfect chance to add some surrounding pieces and if Darnold doesn't work out, there's always next draft to grab your "can't miss" QB.

Not too mad at the Panthers, it's a gamble but what were their other options at QB? Looking all but sure that the top 4 picks is going QB and it's a rich price to jump into those spots. Also with CMC getting back healthy, not sure if the Panthers fall back into the top 10 next year.

I don't get how it is a bad trade for the Panthers... in fact I think it is a great trade for them... they get a prrvious top 5 pick QB for cheap...

The jets were probably the ones that made the bad deal... they basically gave him away...
Yeah I don't see this a bad deal for the Panthers, especially if they trade Teddy B for a pick or two... They could get a 4th or 5th for him imo... Giving up those picks was worth the risk/reward for Darnold...

Very limited trade market for Bridgewater now that the free agency rush has passed. How many teams don't have a QB, don't have a shot at a QB in the Draft, and would be interested in Bridgewater at $17M? $10M of Bridgewater's money is fully guaranteed so cutting him isn't free. There isn't much incentive for Bridgewater to re-work his contract just to help the Panthers out.

Not sure why Darnold continues to get so much love. Sure he was in a bad situation but so were a ton of other first round busts and I don't remember them getting this benefit of the doubt the way Sam has. I'll believe it when I see it.

Tannehill is the only example we can use of this actually working out. All the others went the way of Heath Shuler and Blaine Gabbert. Teams always think they can get the most out of the bust, most every one has failed.
