Dalton's numbers look pretty good, but he has not matured into the postseason guy we need. However, there really is not a much better option out there right now that is affordable.
Do you think Dalton would be open to a two year contract extension, that keeps him here, well paid at a high rate, gets him into FA still young enough to sign a long term contract, but gives us a chance to draft someone like Mettenberger to see if he can be groomed into a decent QB?
I am just thinking, we don't want to start from scratch basically, but want a chance to evaluate, is a guy like Mettenberger capable of being our starter of the future (I use his name hypathetically), or does Dalton pick up his game and become that guy we need in the postseason due to the push by Mettenberger sitting on the bench right now.
The last two years, Dalton has not had any real competition sitting behind him on the bench. Josh Johnson and Bruce Gradkowski? I mean come on. He has not been pushed yet, and I think he needs to be.
However, there is a fine line between wanting to keep Dalton for at least a couple years while we see about another QB growing into the role and losing him for good too early because we are not offering up a long term contract.
Would Mike Brown and Marvin even entertain the idea of something like that, or is it going to be long term contract or bust for both management and Dalton?
