I mentioned him the other day on another site as a good target for M's. Whatever.

Blue Jays acquired outfielder Daulton Varsho from the Diamondbacks for catcher Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The Diamondbacks had four left-handed outfielders, which made Varsho available in case anyone met a very high asking price. The Jays did just that, though one wonders if they'd have been better off doing this a couple of weeks ago before signing Kevin Kiermaier. A Varsho-Kiermaier-George Springer outfield will be ridiculously good defensively. Offense will be a little more of a question mark. Varsho hit 27 homers last season, but they came with a .235 average, a .302 OBP and a modest 35% hard-hit rate. There's reason to think Varsho will improve, particularly now that he's set to do little if any catching. As a fantasy catcher -- perhaps for just one more year -- he's about as good of a bet as anyone. Still, he probably had a little more value hitting leadoff in Arizona than he will hitting fifth or sixth in Toronto.

Honestly I think this is a clear win for the Diamondbacks.

The Blue Jays essentially improve slightly from Gurriel at the expense of giving up one of the former top prospects in baseball with Moreno who had a solid start to his MLB career.

I know the Blue Jays already have Kirk, but shit if you're going to shop Moreno at least go for someone like Bryan Reynolds.

Varsho might be better than Reynolds over the next few years.

Varsho was the top defensive OF last year and is younger. His big issue is the numbers vs LHP aren't great.
Reynolds obviously has a longer track record too.

However bringing up Reynolds is good, because it shows what it would take to land him. Moreno if he didnt have the abs he did would be considered a Top 10 prospect and the Ms dont have one of those anymore. This just goes to show you that it wont be easy to trade your way to massive improvement. Our system may be more solid then its been in years past but we do not have a bunch of blue chip guys anymore.

Impressive considering that the Mariners have traded away and graduated a ton of talent.

I just looked at 9/10 of our top prospects prior to 2020 have either graduated or no longer in the organization (Evan White the only one still with us).
