To be fair, our best player didn’t suit up for that game, and Braxton Woodson was not ready.

It’s a much closer game than it ended up being. Woodson had no threat of passing the ball, and I dont think they wanted him to do too much, and so you really saw a shell of the offense that they’re capable of playing. It was definitely not a game that you put on your playoff resume.

I’ve maintained that I’m fine with a G5 team playing in the playoffs. But I’ve also referenced the Navy/ND series, where you need to have a superior talent on the G5 team, and execute a flawless gameplan to put yourself into position to win the game.

Fun fact regarding playoff selections since the playoff began.

There have been over 40 (P4,P5) Conference Championship games since 2014. Only one time did the loser not drop. It was this years Alabama team. Had they dropped one spot at a minimum like every other loser Notre Dame would have been in.

Only 2 Conference Champ Winners drop a spot
2019 OSU jumped by LSU. This was very favorable for LSU who got the 4 seed.
2023 Florida St. jumped by Alabama. FSU was undefeated and was jumped by a 1 loss team

Only 1 time has a team that did not play in the CCG move from outside of the bubble into the playoffs.
2017 Wisconsin undefeated lost to tOSU. Bama sat on the side lines and jumped a CCG losers.

Only 1 time has a team that was inside of the bubble drop to outside swapping places with another team that was on the outside hence ND this year.

Does anybody see a common bias regarding the selection process? Does this have anything to do with the lobbyist from the SEC and ACC that are both part of the ESPN Committee lobbyist group. Please share your thoughts.

Nothing negative from me on this post. I maintained last year that I wouldn’t penalize a loss in a CCG as long as the team didnt get boatraced. SMU lost by three points and dropped. Meanwhile, Alabama is held to negative rushing yards for the second time in program history and got ran off the field by Georgia and they don’t drop.

And nowhere in their justification was the volume of injuries that Alabama played that game with, either, and we all know that the committee dropped FSU when Travis was out for the year. That was a four team playoff, but the precedent was still there.

Pretty sure all those players were healthy when they got smoked by Florida State. When the committee decide to go back and watch the first game of the season betweeen Miami and ND, the should have watch Alabama and FSU as well

They beat Syracuse by 63.

Alabama isn’t the same team right now that beat Georgia. Alabama got a big lead and Georgia adjusted but they’re not built to come back. Georgia got better and Alabama stagnated. We all saw that Alabama doesn’t belong on the same field with Georgia. Vanderbilt didn’t beat anyone who is currently ranked. Tennessee lost to every good team they played this year. The SEC scheduled for themselves 5 slots in the playoffs by having the best teams avoid each other as much as possible.

Maybe not dead, but certainly coughing up blood. Did you follow the saga of the always popular Birmingham Bowl late into the evening? Seven team turned them down....seven. Rather than playing in meaningless games, teams are figuring out their Decembers are better spent trying to retain their best players and scouring the portal to replace those who leave. This is the future, and those low NIT bowls will start to go t*ts-up.

As an aside, I am sorry to see that game in Detroit go away. I've gone to it probably ten times under four different names, including the first ever Cherry Bowl in 1984. Most memorable was the Motor City Bowl between Marshall and BYU. The game wasn't that great, but the cultural clash between the LDS folks and the tobacco chewing rednecks with more fingers than teeth was a social psychology master thesis waiting to be written. Disgraceful behavior on the part of the Marshall fans.

I hate seeing the bowls go away - I’ve always enjoyed them. While the playoff is the best way to determine a champion, it’s disappointing that it’s rendered the bowls meaningless and that teams are even declining to participate in them.

If I were the dictator of college football here are the changes that I would make.
#1 Get rid of all Conference Championship games.
#2 Each conference gets 1 autobid and will be determined based on a preseason tiebreaker they put in place.
#3 Expand the conference field with to 20. The first four games will match up the lowest 8 ranked teams.
#4 Tournament starts First week after the regular season.
#5 Army and Navy would have a bye week last week of the season. If one team has playoff implication they play the final week otherwise it get bumped back.
#6 Rounds of 16 and 8 would be played at home field of highest ranked team.
#7 And by for the most important change would be to get rid of the ESecPN selection committee. There are 80+ unbiased computer polls that predetermine how teams are ranked. Perhaps have the P4 teams each select to polls and the G5 teams each select 1.
