Reds monitoring Tony Cingrani's workload
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
Reds pitching coach Bryan Price told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the club will monitor Tony Cingrani's innings as the season winds down. Price does not have a firm limit with Cingrani yet.

"We're certainly aware," Price said. "We haven't set anything in stone. From our philosophy, it would suggest we'll monitor his usage."

Cingrani has averaged 5.7 innings per start. He is at 125 1/3 after his start Wednesday. The 24-year-old rookie is 6-2 with a 2.78 ERA in 20 appearances (15 starts).

Ok, if they shut him down, and if Cueto doesn't come back. Who takes his place? Villerral maybe?

Innings isn't a problem with Cingrani- it's pitch counts. He can't go 6 innings without 140 pitches.

With a veteran staff, 4 guys can go 5 weeks, so I don't think they will shut Cingrani down. They may skip a start or two.

Playoff rotations of more than 3 are unnecessary, and not highly recommended if you want to win. Unfortunately, Cingrani is the only LHSP, but wouldn't be one of Dusty's picks to start playoffs anyway.

Cingrani will always have a high pitch count unless he starts grooving his fastball.
He depends on the strikeout more than any other pitcher in the rotation.
He's effectively wild at times but I think playoff baseball would expose his inexperience.
He won't be shut down this season. He hasn't pitched that much. The scribe who asked the question got the answer the Price thought the scribe wanted to hear.

Scouting report will force Cingrani to adapt. His success isn't just reliant on the strikeout, it's reliant on the borderline high fastball getting swinging strikes. They lay off that pitch, and not only does his high pitch count go up, so does his walk rate, and hitability 8 inches lower in the zone. Price is a low zone, sinker ball guru...oppage to Cingrani's repertoire so far. Cingrani being a lefty that can throw mid nineties is his biggest attribute, but he's going to have to develop something down that can be thrown for a swinging strike to be what they need him to be, IMO.

A nasty curveball would be nice but he's not going to be able to live on the high fastball much longer.

Because last season Cingrany threw 150 innings. I expect his number to be in the 170-190 range
