This is great because I learned from Fangraphs yesterday that AT&T and Righetti turn mediocre pitchers into all-stars. Seriously, don't know anything about Kontons, but love the idea of trading positional strength to address an organizational weakness.

Kontons Profile. Looks like the Yankees saw him more as a bullpen arm.

Thanks, gp. There is a long list of your posts today that I would have repped if I could. This one is added to it. It sounds like Kontos could be a pretty decent righty specialist if Ramirez or Casilla go down/Wilson gets traded or hurt.

And Kontos has 3 option years left (including this season) as this year is the first year he's been optioned. So he can develop if necessary, and be available as needed. I'm shocked that Stewart got such a great return.

Here a tid-bit from Baseball America:

Kontos lost a year to Tommy John surgery beginning in July 2009, but he's pitched effectively as a reliever since returning, and he made his big league debut in September. His fastball sits 89-91 mph and features some life, but his go-to pitch is a mid-80s slider that makes him more effective against same-sided batters. Kontos has held Triple-A righties to a meager .194/.253/.362 batting line in 346 plate appearances dating back to 2009 (though with 11 homers allowed). He has three minor league options remaining, though he can elect free agency if outrighted off the 40-man roster.

Also, this is the 4th time the Yankees have acquired Stewart since 2008, they really like to trade/sign for this guy

And thank you for your insightful posts. That reminds me to go back and spread some reps around.

Minor league stats and velocity: remind me of Chris Ray.

After reading that article, I think that would be his ceiling. Not Romo 2.0, mind you. Few guys get that ceiling. Poor man's Romo sounds good to me.

He sounds like Ramon Ramirez 2.0.

Decent righty reliever who can get one through the 7th when a certain someone doesn't last too long.

Great deal imo, especially when one considers the fact that we gave up nothing to sign Stewart, and traded him for something.

I honestly didn't think that either Stewart or Whiteside would be worth even a sweat-stained jockstrap, but apparently the Yankees thought otherwise. (Stewart was traded to the Yankees for George Kontos, a relief pitcher who made his MLB debut last Sep.) This is great return for a purely defensive backup catcher. Kontos pitched extremely well in AAA last year, and had a good (but extremely limited) pro debut. Although he's been a reliever the last two years, before that he was a starter. This is seriously a great haul for Stewart. Kudos for the Giants' front office being able to pull one off.

Also, Kontos has 3 option years left (including this season) as this year is the first year he's been optioned. So he can develop if necessary, and be available as needed this year or next or the year after. As if you couldn't tell, I'm shocked that Stewart got us such a great return.

This.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. I've seen him a couple of times and that is a very apt analogy.

That good or bad in your eyes?

Ray was a decent closer till he blew his arm out, and has been bouncing around the league since then.
