The naming rights to the Giants' private stadium have expired apparently, and it will now be called 'Oracle Park'

I know a bunch of you geezers here still call it by it's original name, so this is a big change for you.

Source: Giants change name of ballpark to 'Oracle Park'

The article contradicts itself saying the Giants have been looking for a new name to take place after the 2019 agreement is over, but then it says the change will be effective immediately :noidea:

The stadium is also getting a huge new scoreboard that will post advanced stats and such. Apparently it's going to be as big as AT&T Satdium's (ha!) notorious scoreboard, which is pretty massive.

Giants putting 'best scoreboard in baseball' at AT&T Park

Games are also going to start at 6:45, which I've noted before. I really like that change.

In other news, they're still going to charge $20 for a single craft beer.

So, in its 20 years of existence, the park has been called:
Pacific Bell (PacBell) Park (2000-2003)
SBC Ballpark (2004-2005)
AT&T Park (2006-2018)
Oracle Park (2019- )

The corporate names give more character to parks but I don't like how they can be changed.

???

I totally understand why the corporate names exist, but I long for the days of “Wrigley Field” or “The Great Western Forum”. Those were the good ol’ days...

Seriously....

Candlestick, Chavez Ravine, Shae, Mile High etc gave personality to stadiums.

I think the first two changes occurred because the corporation was bought-out.

But I still prefer off-hand names like the 'Phone Booth' or Candlestick

I was thinking of more generic names than those, good point.

walked by today (btw the field looks incredible with recent rains) and oracle signage is already on a banner at willie mays plaza..... i still refer to it as pacbell only recently slipping in an att or two. oracle has a 10yr deal (with opt out options) so 'oracle' may enter my lexicon at some point.

not surprised... salesforce.com (orcacle/larry_ellison's nemisis) has the giant phallic symbol skyscraper and naming on the new transit center.... ellison likely felt the was losing the publicity presence wars

regarding the new scoreboard a knbr caller noted that it will be much easier to see the giants run total or '0' or '1' with the new scoreboard

unfortunately a more local generic name has never stuck.... giants stadium is confused with ny giants. there's no recognizable local land mark (mission bay.... south beach.... none of those work) i'd be fine with willie mays park

Something like Mays Field, or China Basin Park or McCovey Stadium....

But there are no parks named after players (that I can think of), so I like China Field (or something similar)

K&K typically refer to the stadium as the "China Basin" if they weren't calling by it's actual name

Oh, and the linked article had the sentence "Giants special assistant Dusty Baker, who managed the club when the ballpark opened in 2000, also attended the news conference.". I was gob-smacked. Where have I been for the past year? I didn't realize they brought him back! (I hope somebody can give me a good reason WHY, I was never a fan of his management. I still get pissed when I remember the 2000 playoffs against the Mets.)

He was brought back into the fold about mid-way through the ‘18 season. My sense was that it was more as a “community ambassador” type position.

Hmm, learning something new about you. Were you there in anticipation of the Giants move across the peninsula to St Pete?
LOL

I went to UM out of hs (didn’t get my degree from there, though). I lived there from 93 to 98 then moved to the middle of the palm in Michigan until 03. Been in SD ever since.
