Texas Longhorn football alone has been estimated at 1.1 billion dollars, net worth. But college football is an amateur sport; so make sure to not pay the players.

Duncery.

They would have to pay all athletes not just football, which holds it back.

Sure, sign them to contracts so they are required to play in bowl games, can't transfer under any circumstances, and can be fired/released if they don't perform up to expectations out of high-school or get injured.

Is there something with the water with Texas fans? They all seem to support compensating players. And I agree with them.

Right on, brother. And then we can implement dress codes, initiate mandatory study halls, frequent drug testing on a regular basis with a schedule of penalties to avoid any hint of preference given to individual players, a morals clause in their contracts, severance penalties if they are kicked off the team, requirements to take any grievance to arbitration in lieu of filing a law suit, etc., etc. Damn right! Let's do what Jersey Boy wants to do and shit can the current system. A payment system would be soooooo much better.

As a scholarship athlete they are paid with tuition, room and board, tutoring, life coaching, nutritionists, training, medical, and a monthly stipend. They pay ZERO taxes on any of those benefits.

ADD in the crazy boosters, which all teams have, as an extra benefit.

An NFL practice squad player makes at most $128,000 per year, which is before taxes. Then they have the added expense of paying for training and nutritionists to keep in top physical shape. To go along with all the other normal life stuff that you and I go through.

NFL Practice Squad 101: Everything to know

When on the practice squad, there is absolutely no guarantee of being there each week. $128,000 is good money for four months worth of work, but most players do not make it through the entire season on the practice squad. There is zero stability.

For NFL practice squad players, the ‘checks aren’t what you think they are’

The student athlete should be smart enough to realize that getting that free education is what they will need to make it to the age of 65. But then, quite a few of the football players end up not doing that.

Football and basketball players are coddled, if they were on the women's teams or any other male sport, they would be envious of how much the football and basketball players are actually given.

If all the petroleum companies formed the National Petroleum Association of America (NPAA), and that association dictated that all new petroleum engineers had to work for 30k and room and board for a couple of years while the industry raked in billions, you and the federal government would be dropping the metaphorical hammer on such an unamerican, unfair, illegal, laughable monopoly.
For some reason, because it's the status quo, you dunces support the N(C)AA and support not letting the principals negotiate for compensation.

How many NCAA programs make a big profit from athletics?

75% of schools would be forced to scrap their varsity football program. But at least we will have satisfied the entitlement of some.

Doesn’t matter. It has ceased being an amateur sport decades ago. It’s a multi billion dollar industry. In fact, just one school’s program is in the seven digits.
The schools make millions, the individual coaches make millions, the broadcasters make millions, everyone associated with the sport is spending and making millions... except for the principals doing the sport.
No monopoly should dictate to the principals their compensation in such an enterprise. It’s laughably unfair, unamerican, immoral, and illegal.

So, you've never heard of interns?

There are plenty of industries where people either don't get paid to learn on the job, or get paid WAY less than scale for sometimes a few years before they can make what they deserve.

I hate this bullshit. College is about going to college. If free room and board isn't enough, then gtfo. Go start a football farm league. As if giving some of these Neanderthals a college diploma isn't ridiculous enough?

The vast majority of scholarship athletes don't turn pro. They end up with degrees, serious professional contacts, a resume grabber, and no student debt. All while playing a game they love in front of thousands of people and all that TV exposure.

Sure, they are abused. :L

Interns aren’t principals. Vince Young wasn’t holding clipboards and getting coffee for the staff meeting.

The players are the principals in this multi billion dollar industry. Try again

This is the dumbest comparison I've ever heard. To be an actual engineer, you have to have a college degree. I've never heard of a college athlete who has gone to school long enough to have a degree who isn't eligible to go pro and get paid. And guess what? If they have a degree and somehow can't go pro, they're free to go off and do anything else they want and get paid. You know, like any other person alive. Except the difference is they have 0 debt, compared to millions of other grads who have to deal with it.

Don't be a dipshit.

If only these players had the option to not have to play football and just go to college as a regular student.

Oh wait. They do.
