To me, this is a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

If RR had welcomed AS back on the team with open arms, following a grueling comeback, and he had suffered a setback / injury, then RR would have been blasted for being callous, cavalier, and uncaring with respect to all that AS has been through.

When he made AS proceed with caution, it appears as though at least to AS, that he "wasn't wanted."

As it turns out, AS proved everybody wrong in that he could play in the NFL without sustaining a significant injury.

As it turns out RR proved everybody wrong about AS too - he is brittle now, can't really escape the run, and the best you can say about his play is that he didn't do much to win games, and he didn't really lose any games.

I think Washington planned to trade Smith for someone and when that didn't work out, plans to cut Smith, but maybe not until June or later. I think Smith wants out soon so he can try to get signed somewhere as a starter, spot starter, or backup close to home. But maybe he felt they’d drag their feet? I know he cannot force them to cut him now, force them to start him now, or anything, but Smith is experienced with interviews that he either is going to be honest to a fault and let the chips fall where they may or wants out sooner than later knowing that he’s likely out either way. Just my thoughts.

Incidentally, he did say some believed him, maybe that some was Ron and hence he wasn’t cut and was given the chance but others with less power didn’t?

i honestly don't know how to take this.
the franchise was a mess, and the new order likely had no idea Smith would be able to play.
I don't know what else they could have done, he got to play and he got hurt and couldn't continue.
Why would a new regime want Haskins or AS? I love Alex at QB, but i wouldn't want him either

It might have been the seventeenth surgery, Alex.
i mean, 16 surgeries are doable for a team, but 17...? THAT’S when a team has to say enough is enough - we dont want you!!!

:L
This team can’t get away from drama

If you read this article, you might feel better about how the WFT handled the situation. It reads to me like they handled Alex’s condition as well as to be expected...

I agree with this, both sides ultimately got what they wanted. Rivera doesn't make the playoffs without AS. And AS never sees the field with any other team.
Smith needs to retire, you can only cheat death so often

This is why, even as a Niners fan, I was so hoping the D would get you the SB. It would have been a happy ending for everyone, I guess except Brady who would still play and Mahomes who lost this year anyway And will be playing long from now.

As prolific as Shanahan is, it seems every great year he has, is followed by epic failure. That division is going to be TOUGH, i don't envy you guys
