Never heard of the guy but I was just looking at the Reading Phillies box score so I looked up his minor league stats. He's a 26 year old 2nd baseman who played some college ball at the University of Delaware. A little old to still be in Reading but the guy has some interesting stats. Not much home run power but he has but he always has an obp of around .360 at every level. Does anyone know anything about him?

Looks like he is just slightly better than being mediocre.

If he can play some defense I wouldn't say that at all. I like guys that have more than one walk for every 10 plate appearances. If he got on base at a .350-.360 clip even with limited power he would be better than most 2b in the national league. He wouldn't be Chase Utley, but neither will Cesar Hernandez or anyone else they will have in the foreseeable future.

An interesting observation Cedrique. Alonzo played college ball until he was 22 years old. He has a lifetime 371 OBP in the minors. Truly amazing. He is listed as a utility player. He plays 2nd base,3rd base and left field but is a better fit in the infield. Oakland would value this type of player.

He also won a minor league gold glove at 2nd base in 2013. And he showed some power in College, although I don't think the competition is the same at U of Delaware as it is in the SEC and ACC .

Update; He hit his 7th Homer tonight and had 2 hits in 4 at bats!

Not in Ruben "the brain" Amaro's book

You're right. I was caught up in the fact that he had two straight seasons with an OPS of .713 and .709 in his mid-20's at AA, but I forgot he was a second baseman. He's putting together a nice season now. 122 wRC+. Nice

They're D1, so that does mean something.

yeah, you're right. 16 hrs in 200 ABs and a 1.100 OPS at a division I school is nothing to sneeze at. I just know college baseball starts in February so most of the guys who are really serious about it play in the ACC or SEC or California where the weather is better that time of year.
Regardless, this guy is kicking ass for someone that was drafted in the 32nd round

IDK Cedrique. The fact that Alonso has been in the minors for so long, he is getting up there as baseball years go, and that he completely fulfills Amaro's criteria for Philles training and seasoning, I'd say he's ready to be called up or traded.

Yeah, with everything there is always that underlying stipulation that hopefully Amaro will be gone soon or will at least get a little better at his job. If an infielder comes up to the majors when he's 27 or 28 years old, hopefully management will realize that they probably only want that guy for about 5 years and not sign him long term to retire a phillie.

Amaro will probably lose Alonzo in the rule 5 draft. There is no way that he will add him to the 40 man roster next season. Instead Amaro will keep an aging veteran to block him.

Alonso is showing a little more pop this year than in previous years, but keep in mind he's been pretty old for every level he's played at.

That's usually a sure sign that he will make it to the big leagues. Hopefully he and Caesar will soon be a double play combo to be reckoned with. Throw Ash, Rup and Dikeman into the mix and we at least have some decent young players to go with the old standby's such as Hammels.

That's how we do it in Philly. We're grooming the infield version of Chris Coste
