Can a team remove the franchise tag at any time if the player doesn't sign it, or is it there for keeps once today's deadline passes?

I think it can be pulled at any time. Which is why if I were a player that got tagged, I'd sign that paper ASAP, especially if there were a large hit associated with it. Imagine if DJax signed the tag. They would almost have to sign him to a long term deal to reduce the hit this next year. Or they could trade him, but the return would be lower with that big one year price tag he has.

A long term deal doesn't necessarily lower the hit this next season. If he signs his franchise tender, he is guaranteed 9.4 million this season. If he feels he doesn't want to play for less than that this upcoming season, he could always negotiate a long term contract that pays him his franchise salary this season and gets progressively smaller the following seasons.

would suck if the eagles draft floyd then remove the tag on djax. he'll still get paid, but he'll miss the bidding war that can drive up the contract
