I certainly hope not. If it actually goes through, it'll probably tear up the NCAA, or make the California schools go off and do their own thing until/unless everyone else does the same. And if everyone else antes up without some sort of built in agreement, it hits at Title IX stuff, and it hits at general equality and and anything remotely close to fairness. It'd be like having 10ish Lakers and Celtics, or Yankees and Dodgers, without any of the profit sharing and caps built in.

That's what they need. There is a conversation and a moralistic need to compensate athletes for their like and their service, especially the few that are really high value. They deserve it. However, it can't just be a completely unlimited capitalistic race unless you want to make it a situation where whoever has the most and biggest Uncle Phils at the moment gets to win. If you're going to pay the players, there needs to be a CBA. And if you have a CBA, you're going to be floating the women's volleyball team.

That's the thin white line that the NCAA's "amateurism" has always been tight roping. There's no way that I can understand to equalize opportunity without also equalizing compensation across all scholarship sports.

Lawyas gonna lawya. The best way I can think of it is to make a pool of NCAA athlete marketing incomes, strictly enforced, that would then trickle down to everyone. So while there might be a Cam Newton who's worth 2 million bucks a year for Auburn, or a Leinart worth 2 million for USC, or whoever, he gets a fraction of what he's worth. Which isn't fair, but how do you keep it fair without profit sharing, and how do you not violate Title IX?

There's a reason the NCAA has been hiding behind its amateur status for decades, and this is the exact one. They don't know the answer, and nobody else does either.

It might come down to joining the Big 12.
Well, we'd love to have UW! BTW, we are a fun loving group and not snooty at all. When the Huskies make their first trip to Ames, we'll show you a good time. :)

Now they've done so on the field, for 2019 at least
