They should just wait it out until the deadline at 1B. Thames isn't a sure thing at 1st at all. I wouldn't move Braun just yet if I were the Brewers.Seems like a good deal. Cain has been a 4+ WAR outfielder three of the last four years (2016 being the exception and he still managed 2.5 WAR in 104 games). He will be 32 at the beginning of the year, but that may not be such an issue considering he's somewhat of a late bloomer.
An outfield of Braun/Cain/Yelich/Santana? is pretty damn good. I'd say move Braun to 1B, but they got pretty good production from Aguilar/Thames. Or move him to 3rd. Lol.

Shaw was good last year, but I'm not sure that his 2017 success is repeatable. He saw a large jump in his HR/FB rate (from 10.3% in 2016 to 20.5% in 2017). Steamer projects him to be about league average offensively (.250/.324/.457, 99 wRC+). ZiPS is a little more optimistic (.256/.323/.472).
Fangraphs still isn't very high on the Brewers (77-85). The pitching projects to be considerably worse than last year plus some offensive players regressing. I do think they'll be better than that and the offense has potentil, but I see them winning around 83-86 unless they can get another starter (or two).
As for Cain:
that would be a pretty good contract if it played out as such.
Yeah I thought it was odd to go for Cain When Nelson is out. The lack of pitching is a huge issue.
I like to see the Brewers "going for it" but I'm having trouble figuring out the Yelich deal. I keep looking at the numbers Domingo Santana put up last year and wondering why the Brewers wouldn't be excited about him being a full time right fielder this year. He's 25 years old. I get that the Brewers are in a hitters park and Cain and Yelich are coming from pitchers parks and you'd expect them to have better numbers in Milwaukee but man, for a young guy getting his first 150 game season Santana's numbers look Solid.

Not sure that those moves mean they're not high on Santana. The Brewers are supposedly considering giving Braun some playing time at 1st base. I imagine they'll be moving at least one of Broxton/Phillips.

Yeah, you kind of answered my question in the other post you made while I was typing it out. Assuming the Brewers are using analytics, the strikeout rate combined with the high BABIP may show that it will be tough for him to repeat last year's numbers. Not sure that those moves mean they're not high on Santana. That makes sense. Too bad they're not still in the ALSantana is an awful OF. That’s part of it
