Remember the proposal for that stupid law that would have created a "violence reward fund" for all CA stadiums? Well, Mike Gatto's verson failed (this guy is proof we need a part time legislature; they have WAY too much time on their hands). The legislature passed an amended version called the "Personal Safety at Stadiums Act," which has yet to be signed by the Governor. As far as I can tell it just requires stadiums to post security phone & text numbers in a certain amount of visible places.

Although this is a tiny, itsy bitsy little stuipid example of how the people who run California are moronic busy bodies who want to regulate EVERYTHING under the sun, I'm glad it's only more signs. Not a huge deal.

...This is kind of like how CA passed a law (if I understood it correctly) saying cartain businesses must post instructions on how to wash one's hands in restrooms. Thank God for that, because without instructions I have no idea what to do with that foamy, liquid stuff by the sink!

Yeah, that thing where teams had to fund the reward thing was nonsense. Glad it got shot down, although this also seems like a pointless bill. Most teams already have that text message system to report idiot fans, don't they?

Wouldn't know, but this would only affect stadiums in California.

It's honestly a waste of paper and a waste of ink for the rubber stamps. I don't think they have a concept of going a day without passing a bill in this state. They passed over 700 last year.

I never viewed the washing the hand signs as big government. I always thought it was more about, "hey the public, do not worry, we are here to protect you from those nasty germs." It is more symbolic than intrusive. So, those signs in the stadium will be the same message. They are there to make some people feel safe and comfortable.

Btw, legally, I do not think the state can force a private enterprise like the MLB to set aside money to pay people. That is unless the violence is too out of hand and a judge was okay with making a change. Even then, it would be seen as too far by most people (no matter the political leaning). To me, the failed Gatto's proposal only shows how far government can reach. Again, I will restate that if the violence gets worse, then the state will feel more confident in its legal standing to force such a measure that Gatto proposed. Also, don't most stadiums post signs of who to call. If so, this is meaningless.

Just a note, I only go to one game a year because the violence has gone up. My family has had season tickets since they went to Candlestick and I was able to enjoy the games since I was old enough to go (so about 20 years). One game in particular against the Bears a few years back, I saw multiple fights in my section. We had to break up a fight between 49ers fans. Most were drunk, since it was a night game. I do not like going to games anymore because I have to watch my back instead of enjoying the game. Really, I had to stop a fight between two guy, one in the row in front and one row behind me. I would not mind a restriction of alcohol. So, going back to the original topic, the state could restrict the sale of alcohol at sporting venues, but they will be sued my multiple parties because it will be in violation of contracts between teams and the beer companies. The state would not win that case, even in California.

That's just as bad IMO. They're megalomaniacs who think they know best in every situation and should control everything; and in the process they make a lot of things worse. 2 bills a day is simply too many. It gets to the point where nobody can even keep track of all laws there are. This bill isn't that bad, but the point that it's just another TINY piece if red tape bugs me. I'm just glad they didn't create another slush fund (if, like you said, that would've even been legal).

I think stadiums simply need to scan an ID & then the ticket when people enter the stadium. Add a +1 for any minors, and that way they have a name & face for every adult butt in the seat. With all the cameras at the games it would be incredibly easy to convict people of this crap. However, I wouldn't want a law passed saying thay HAD to do that. If they could come up with a cost effective way to do it very easily, then it would catch on in other venues & sports.

Well I was talking about the California teams... I thought the 49ers, Raiders and Chargers already had those signs in the stadium to report unruly fans via a text message to security. I just assumed the Giants, A's, Dodgers, Kings, Lakers, Clippers, Kings, Ducks...probably left out a team... all did the same... because it is common sense to have that system in place to avoid being named in a lawsuit after an assault.
