What are all of your thoughts on Brian Wilson's feelings being hurt? I do feel for him as he did sacrifice himself for the Giants in 2010 and obviously the beginning of this year. That said, didn't the Giants kind of "pay him" for his services in 2012 (being that they paid him $8M while he was recovering)?

I feel bad, I really like Willy and i hope he comes back. I also understand that he did (possibly) sacrifice his career for us and he definitely deserves some slack.....I'm kind of torn here. Supposedly (heard on KNBR) the Giants offered him around a $3.5M base iirc, with incentives to make up to the $6.8 he would have gotten. I have no clue if the incentives were fair or not, but I would hope our org wouldn't do that to him after all he's done for us.

Regardless of the outcome, I'll always have a soft spot for Weezy and I will wish him the best no matter where he goes.....unless it's the Dodgers, then I'll cheer him the first time and boo him like mad after that. :heh:

what do you guys think about offering him a deal in the 2-3 mill range with incentives for this year, and a vesting option for next year if he reaches a certain amount of innings for around the 8-9 mill he would be getting if healthy.

I have always been a proponent of an incentive contract for '13 with a team option for '14 that would put him back on track to a 7-figure/year career. something like 10M/1M buyout.

DrB had a great post on his blog a few days back. The comments were great.

If you have not checked it out, you should.

This is really a tough call. I loved what Willy did for us. But, many of us on this board has played some form of organized ball in some fashion or another. I'm also guessing that many of us have played hurt to some extent during that time. Personally, whenever I chose to play hurt it was more about me than it was the team. I wanted to play and I thought I could overcome whatever it was that was bothering me. I may have used the 'team needs me' as the rationale but in the end it was me who made the decision and not the team. I'd also be willing to bet that Willy underplayed his injuries to some extent just so he could take the field. I just can't see a team physician allowing a player to take the field knowing that his career was in jeopardy.

Kind of brings in the Strasburg debate too...

SF11704 makes some good points, but I can also see, I think, where Willie is coming from. The Giants have thrown close to a hundred million dollars at guys who didn't come close to performing, why is another 3-4 million suddenly a sticking point for a guy who worked his ass off to be ready to play every day and, ultimately, left it on the field for you?

Nevertheless, being coldly objective about the situation, I think the Giants made the right decision.

Yeah, I agree. Sometimes it sucks when you can "see" both sides of the argument. It usually means that both sides have "good" reason to do what they did/feel how they feel. I also agree that the Giants (from a baseball/business decsion) made the right call.

Do you think there will be any negative type of repercussions in the future? (i.e. - you see what they did to Willy and look what he did for them*)

* and yes, I know my timing is ironic considering Pagan JUST re-signed. lol

EDIT: Also, 11704 did make some good points. Obviously, they're not even close to being an apples to apples discussion, but I know I hid a few injuries to play in games (it's just that nobody was lining up at my doorstep to offer me $Millions :heh:).

No, I wouldn't expect any negative repercussions from other players. I don't think anyone will think the Giants treated Wilson unfairly.

I was really hoping he'd come back, and I thought it would be a real possibility when Madson signed his deal.

Now, we'll see. I don't think he's going to the Dodgers, I think that was all a smoke-screen to give Weez leverage. But I have my doubts he's coming back here. I wish he was, or else it will be a very unfortunate end to a brilliant Giants career. I don't think the Giants treated him unfairly, but I do think that Wilson has a reason to be a little bummed. But that's just baseball, its a business.

I was hoping he would come back as well although I thought the Madson deal was rather expensive and I wouldn't have wanted the Giants to give Wilson a similar contract. I would have switched the amounts paid for "being on the roster" and "# of games finished" because IMO once he comes off the DL he most likely isn't going back on it unless his arm is damaged again, and "being good" (and thus getting chances to close) is worth more than "being a warm body on the roster who we don't want closing for us".

Cot's reports his deal as :
* 1 year/$3.5M (2013)
- signed by LA Angels as a free agent 11/28/12
- performance bonuses: $0.25M each for 35, 40, 45, 50 games finished
- roster bonuses: $0.5M each for 1, 45, 90, 135, 180 days on active roster and not on disabled list with right arm injury

Supposedly, per Pavlovic (via twitter), Bochy is going to call Weezy and try and smooth things over.....that seems strange to share publicly unless the event already took place.

I like the dude. He's a good Giant, actually his performance in 2010 makes him a Great Giant. I don't feel bad for him though, as you say he just got paid $8 million in workman's comp. that's more than many of us will ever see in our lifetimes, and he got it in one year for basically just recovering from an injury.

I don't think it's disrespectful what the Giants have done - If its true they offered him $3.5 mil + incentives for twice damaged goods, I think that shows how much they do respect him. It's not like he put his life on the line here. His career as a baseball player possibly, but he's been well paid to play a game. And they are offering him even more money (also more than many of us will ever see in our lifetimes) to come back and play some more.

So sack up Weez! He should just come back to us and fuck the dodgers c'mon seriously? His beard can't get any tanner down there than it already is plus it might get shanked out at the latrine.

I'm not sure how many of you guys remember 'Shooter' (Rod Beck) ... but I felt similar to this when he left us to go to the Cubs as an FA (late 90s)...... we didn't offer him quite enough ... and If I remember correctly he had a good year with them ....

He had lost the closer job with us, and we basically let him walk. Hernandez was acquired that year to take over for him (white flag trade).
